Do you know that feeling when you sense something is watching you? You know… You’re not alone…
I paused in my bidet ablutions. I felt the vibes again and stood up. I turned and immediately stopped breathing. Emerging through the bidet’s plughole, a beetle-like insect with long antennae was struggling to squeeze through the gap. As I watched in terror, I thought about where my butt had just been perched.
Frozen to the spot, I watched as it scrabbled across the basin… I grabbed my phone. OMG! It was a cockroach! I screamed down the phone (apparently incoherently) at Mr P, who was elsewhere in the hotel, to come and help me. I thought that if it got into the bedroom, we’d never find it!
We were three floors up. How on earth had it got up there?
I can’t remember much about what happened next, but apparently, I had a full-blown panic attack. I was shaking violently and screaming every time the thing moved.
Mr P tried to catch it, without success. Then he lost sight of it. Panic!
The housekeeper, who had heard my distress, came to the rescue with some lethal spray. Fortunately, she managed to stun it and catch it and took it away wrapped in toilet paper. Then she bunged up the bidet overflow hole with tissue and reinserted the plug. Mr P did the same with the washbasin overflow and plug, and the bath, when I hysterically pointed out that it could have a family come looking for it.
I was angry. The Real Marina Hotel in Olhao is supposed to be a 5-star hotel, not a hostel. This wasn’t a bug in their outdoor space, or even on the balcony. It was a disgusting cockroach in our bathroom, which I was then terrified to use.
I am disgusted. Cockroaches are a health hazard. When Mr P went to report the incident, the receptionists were like zombies. Not even so much as an apology, only that they would report it to the housekeeping manager.
Fun fact about cockroaches
Cockroaches can run at speeds of up to 3 to 3.4 miles per hour
(about 5 to 5.4 km/h), making them some of the fastest land insects on the planet

URGH! I have seen them before in a rental bungalow in a complex in Gran Canara but as we were on ground level, it was a little more understandable. I just did a quick search and apparently London, Birmingham (me), Manchester, and Cardiff are the worst areas for them over here.

Hi Lana, yes, I was surprised to see one so high up but then according to my research they can live in the pipe work. I never even thought about them being in the UK

Hi Laurie, fortunately, I had booked in for a full body massage as a wedding anniversary treat, so it helped me to relax

Hi Tracy, my horror was the fact that it was indoors and if there was one how many more were lurking in the pipework. Eeeek

Over 3 miles per hour! No wonder they’re hard to catch!
