#WeekendCoffeeShare – The Dreaded D Word, Walk on the Wild Side and Footie

How was your week?

Sigh… Let’s start with the dreaded ‘D’ word. I hold my hands up in despair. I am a porker. I’ve put back on all the weight I’ve lost. Can food talk to us? The little voice that says, ‘Eat me. You know how much you love cheesecake, tiramisu, pavlova, pastries and more, piglet?’
You say ‘no, then the porker inside you says, ‘Go on, one piece won’t hurt. You’ve lost five kilos.’
Of course, it doesn’t stop there. Visitors, meals out, and holidays are great temptations, and gradually, weight piles back on, and your new summer clothes groan at the seams to accommodate the extra bulges. Do you know that feeling? Then you feel like poo, and you pick yourself up and start again. (No pigs, the scales aren’t faulty!).

How do you resist temptation when you are on a diet? Maybe I need my jaws wired.

Wrong specialist …

Finally, I got an appointment with the enterologist to get my results from the endoscopy. Everything should be fine, but I’m still nervous. So, I am waiting outside the guy’s consulting room, and a little man with a bald head appears to call his next patient. I checked his name badge and realised he wasn’t the correct consultant. Now I am chewing a wasp. Not only was the guy running late, but the person on the phone with whom I booked the appointment had made an appointment with the wrong guy! Anyway, thanks to Mr Piglet, the receptionist understood and rebooked me for the correct guy in a couple of weeks’ time. Has this ever happened to you?

On the UP side

Rather than returning home, Mr Piglet suggested we drop off at Alvor and try Pepperoni, an Italian restaurant, for dinner. Naturally, I didn’t take much persuasion, but I managed to resist a starter and dessert. I chose the beetroot, goat’s cheese, walnut, and honey pizza. It was amazing! It made a pleasant change from the normal pizza topping offerings. What is your favourite?

Do you like Footie (Soccer)?

We watched England play Denmark in the World Cup on Thursday at the local bar. I’m not a footie fan but I went along for the craic. My attention span lasted five minutes. Even to my inexperienced eye, the game was slow-paced, and the England team played like old donkeys. And as for the England manager, Gareth Southgate, he stood on the sideline and showed about as much enthusiasm as limp … um… lettuce? in need of some Viagra dressing. Thank God for Aperol Spritz and entertaining company! Any football fans out there?

Wildflowers, Fitbit steps and views

Today, we went for a walk along the cliff road towards Amoreira esturary not only for exercise but also to photograph more wildflowers. Sadly, most of them were dead, dying, or past their best. March, April, and May seem to be the best months for colour and variety. I did manage to clock up 2000 steps and take some nice pictures of the views.

That’s it for this week. Now we’ve finished chatting and sharing pics, we can enjoy the coffee before it gets cold.

My latest novel? You ask. Yeah, When I wasn’t gladding or gardening I spent the week working on ‘Dreams’, a romance set in Portugal. I have only one chapter to check, and then I’ll reread it again.

Many thanks to Natalie our Weekend Coffee Share Hostess

  1. I’ve got an appointment tomorrow to check my 3 month numbers. I’ve been trying to walk 30 minutes most days & trying to make healthier eating choices & eat less portions. Dr’s orders…drink more water, eat less, exercise more. That pizza looks delicious.

    1. Hi Karen, thanks for stopping by good luck with your checkup tomorrow. I wish we had a family doctor to keep me on track

“…drink more water, eat less, exercise more.” Is sound advice.

I’ve lost a 1kg (2.2 Lb) this week just cutting out cookies, cakes, and other carbs.

  2. It is hockey fever as I type with the game in the background. The Edmonton Oilers are tied with the Florida Panthers 3-3, next game is Monday back in Florida.

Needless to say as a Canadian, we are all cheering on the Oilers!

  3. Lovely pictures! Re food, the whole going on a diet thing never works out, one has to just make tweaks in their meals, lifestyle etc until they become new habits, then they are the norm 🙂

  4. Love those coastal views, Carole. Sounds like a good pizza. We seldom have it because my husband doesn’t eat cheese, and what’s a pizza without cheese? He is a footie supporter though, so it was on in the background while I bashed away on these keys. Don’t ask me who scored.

Tavira Day here this weekend so fun and games all round and fireworks on Sunday night. They’ve been digging up the streets to relay water pipes right through the town so there’s a mad scurry to put everything back together. Happy weekend!

      1. Yes, of course! Not recently but I’ve walked around the Carrapateira area, Amoreira and Almograve and up at Vila Nova de Milfontes and Carvalhal. They mostly require a few days away. I like Setubal and Troia too but not at this time of year. Portugal is a lovely place! Preaching to the converted 🤣🩵

  5. Your walk looks lovely. I have the same problem with those kilos that come off and then sneak back on. I think the trick is not to diet. I’m trying to develop the mentally that I’m eating for health and not to diet. It works sometimes.

  6. Yummy pizza. Don’t give up regarding losing weight if it’s important for you. Tried swimming? A gym specialising on those with health issues? Not a footie fan actually don’t watch sports on TV.

    1. Hi Suzanne, losing weight is important because of the issues with my knee. I’ve been told I must lose weight but I am a carb addict and probably eat to compensate depression but it is a vicious circle.

I’m also not a sports fan and rarely watch TV. Probably an hour a day to be socialble.

  7. The weight thing is difficult but can be overcome.

Look up Dr Eric Berg on YouTube. His videos are excellent and he discusses all sorts of health related topics, weight and diets included

I am not usually a fan of such people but l have adopted a few of his suggestions and am happy with the results so far.

I am a footie fan and your assessment of the English side and manager is on the money.

That match was worse than watching paint dry.

    Your photos are lovely.

I reckon a few turns up and down those wooden stairs will see off at least a couple of kilos.

    1. Thanks for the YT recommendations, Ark. I’ll take a look. I like to keep an open mind and will try most things. I do eat a healthy diet most of the time. I just need to control my cravings and have my sweet tooth removed … >) I really must get my head around ‘carbs’.

I use to go up up and down the steps … but sadly vertigo prevent such feats now. I am working on it. And my flipping knee restricts so much in the way of excercise.

      1. Ah, sorry, forgot about the knee.
How about a static bike? Or simply gentle daily walking?
        Or swimming?
Although I don’t really have any issues with weight I have stopped all added sugar and all soft drinks.
        Helps with inflammation.
Hang in there, you’ll find what’s best for you.

        1. Hi Ark, I have a static bike …sigh. I keep forgetting to use it or making excuses when I do. I confess I can be my own worst enemy but when you are in pain all the time with peripheral neuropathy just getting through the day can be a challenge. That said, wallowing in self-pity is not the answer. Stiff upper lip and all that. 🙂
