Weekend Coffee Share

If we were having coffee, I’d tell you the last couple of weeks have been hectic! Hence why I’ve not been online much. Just nine days after returning from a family holiday in England, we were jaunting off on our travels once again to stay with family in France. It was a last-minute decision because our daughter was told that, due to changes in passport entry requirements in the UK, our French grandchildren (who only had French passports) would not be able to enter. It was complicated. I still don’t understand the gremlins of BREXIT bureaucratic logic, but as we say, BREXIT is the gift that keeps giving. But thankfully, as it happened, the situation was resolved at the 11th hour, and they were able to fly.

Yep, in light of the uncertainty, I had nagged Mr Piglet to book the flights as we hadn’t seen the grandkids since last October, and the flight was nearly full. With limited weekly flights at this time of the year, we bit the bullet and booked. I am glad we did, as we got to celebrate our granddaughter’s 15th Birthday and play in the annual village petanque fun tournament. AND, enjoy lots of delicious croissants and French food.

Petanque or is it Boules?

Anyways, whatever….we were delighted to participate once again in the annual village tournament at La Batie Mongascongon a fun tournament organised by the local youth association. This year, our daughter and I got through to the second round, and Mr P and SiL scraped through to the last 16 (they could have gone further but were both a little enebriated by this point).

We had a brilliant day so I’m determined to practice for next year by creating an area in our garden.

In fact, I am already lobbying Mr P to repurpose part of our garden to create our own pentaque area. WE will just need to remove the raised veg bed, some pots and cut down the orange tree, which is almost dead.

A new fur granbaby

Or should I say feather? Meet Gerald the ugly ducklin’!

For some reason, our SiL son-in-law bought six duck eggs because he wanted ducks to eat the slugs in the garden. Only one out of the six hatched. I am still puzzled as to how it will survive. The chickens, which have a coop and an enclosed area, are still regularly gobbled up by weasels, foxes or on one occasion, the neighbour’s dog. At the moment, the duckling lives under a UV light in a cage in the house and is only let out when humans are about.

Diet!

I was doing really well before we went to England. Even when I returned, I managed to lose all the weight I’d gained …sigh…

And then came our holiday in France, and I’m back to square one. My daughter reckons I’m a hopeless case and I’ll never lose weight. I’m half-tempted to try something like Ozempic. I’d love to prove her wrong. But I don’t think it is the amount I eat, rather a food intolerance that causes my belly to bloat. Yep, I’ve watched it grow like proving bread.

In the News!

As we enter another new era of craziness with news of the latest scare: Hantavirus, I am switching off, as I am still trying to suppress the anxiety caused by COVID-19. Nope, not going there. And then there is the fuel crisis. WWIII. Crazy politicians. Blah de blah… etc I just want to live out the rest of my years in peace and blissful ignorance.

Anyways, that’s it for this week, folks. Once again, my apologies for not keeping up with blogs over the last two weeks not only have I been away, but I have also suffered days of a migraine that refused to let go.

My thanks to Natalie the Weekend Coffee Share Host

  1. I’m happy you had a nice holiday with your kiddos, Carole. Sorry to hear about the migraines. Hubs has suffered something similar to migraines for many years, and we were just discussing it again this morning. His blood pressure is fine. He does have some environmental allergies though, and he waits much too long between eye exams and new glasses, so that’s my guess. That duck looks so forlorn. I hope he/she grows into a beauty like the ugly duckling in the fairy tale. Good to see you back and good luck with the diet!

  2. Oh, I’m so glad to hear you had some wonderful travels and got to share some solid time with your grandkids!

Your duckling is adorable! We had a coyote abscond with a mama duck and toss her whole next one year. There were two uncracked eggs and so we incubated them. One hatched and we raised her in the house until she was big enough to join the flock. She adored our daughter and followed her *everywhere! She’s still with us, nine years later, and is the best mama duck we’ve ever had.

I hope you get some rest and practice some self-care. The world is wild.

    1. Hi Melissa, April was a special month for family time, to be sure :)

Gerald is so cute and I had no idea ducks lived for so long. I don’t know if it is male or female. But I think my Sil will need to find him a friend so he doesn’t get lonely.

Yep, the wolrd is certainly wild right now …

  3. No worries about not keeping up with blogs! How busy you have been and in a good way. Wonderful to be able to celebrate your granddaughter’s 15 birthday. Happy, happy to her! And that boules tournament sounds like so much fun. Good luck to that little duckling!

  4. I sure hope your migraine is going away. Petanque looks so fun, you guys did well. I’m going watch a Youtube to see how the game is played. I’m also burying my head in the sand, it’s too much. Croissants mmmmmm. The little duckling is so cute, he looks like a runner duck.

    1. The migraine is a lot better. Thanks Tracy… but it has seriously restricted my screen time hence why I’ve not been active.

Yep, the news is not good for karma … so many lies and mis/disimormation … I am not sure what to believe anymore. IT is alll out of our control, anyways.

A runner duck? Sil did say it is a special breed. I just pray the poor thing survives.

  5. Now petanque is something I’d like to try. A cute duckling. I hatched out some duck egggs once and they were adorable. But my very jealous mini schnauzer killed them all.

  6. Gerald is a cute, ugly duckling.

I’m struggling with the fluctuating weight thing too, and it is very frustrating. I used Noom for 6 months and lost 9 pounds, but gained it back pretty fast without big changes. Not sure how to proceed with it.

I am avoiding watching the news; it’s so heavy lately. My husband, on the other hand, can’t seem to turn it off. So, I do a lot of reading in a different room (haha).

I hope your migraine has lessened or disappeared altogether.

    1. Hi, yes. Gerald is SO cute. IF we lived in the same country I would have adopted him!

As for weight, I am at a loss as to why I can’t lose weight. I have decided to see the doctor/dietician as to the best way forward. I hope you manage to resolve. I know the older we get the harder it is to shed the extra pounds but it is getting ridiculous.

the news …. I don’t know what to believe any more.

      1. Animals are wonderful additions to the family.

I am right there beside you with the weight thing. I have been wondering about the doctor/dietician idea as well. I tracked my eating using the Noom app for 6 months, and I couldn’t find any eating patterns that needed changing. For now, I am continuing to chalk it up to age and hormones.

I hope you are having a nice week.
