Let’s talk about eating out …
I am not referring to basic eating establishments such as ‘McDonald’s’, ‘Pizza Hut’, and other fast-food chains; I mean restaurants that create their own menus and food. Okay, so “Ambience” is just a fancy word for the feel or atmosphere of a place.
If I walk into a restaurant with cosy, warm lighting and soft music, it creates a welcoming, relaxing mood for me. That’s the ambience. Same idea for a restaurant with entertainment, a peaceful garden or terrace. Sea, lake or mountain view. It has the vibe you are looking for to enjoy your meal, and I get that everyone’s preference is different.

Last week, we discovered a lovely restaurant in Alvor that ticked all the ‘cosy’ boxes. ‘Adega d’Alvor‘. Not only did it have a great ambience, but the food and staff were terrific. It also had kerb appeal.

inside cosy courtyard

The food we ordered was also delicious … amazing choice of desserts.
I also like restaurants with a nice view!

Good food at reasonable prices

Dislikes
One of the things I dislike about the ambience of many Portuguese restaurants is the blindingly bright lighting and a TV muttering away to itself in a prominent position. While the food is often great, sitting under bright lights (other than when I eat fish with lots of bones) is not my idea of a relaxing meal out.
Plastic food.
When you order an extra bottle of wine with dessert, and then, as they pour the wine, you are informed that you have to vacate the table in 10 minutes because people are waiting. ~Oh, but you can sit on the stools outside the restaurant. Great. If you have ‘sittings’, tell us when we make the reservation.
Inflated prices. Yep, I understand restaurants with great views can charge more for the privilege, but nothing gets my goat more than establishments that inflate their prices like some restaurants with no view, nada, in the town where we live.
And when a reviewer on TripAdvisor states, ‘This is the BEST restaurant in *****’ (Choose a town). I want to reply: How do you know? Have you tried them all?

Here is my post, with a link back to your original story. ambience is crucial to rounding out the perfect meal, and with Frank Sinatra’s help, I did just that! https://biteeatrepeat.com/2025/11/18/eating-with-frank-sinatra-the-perfect-ambience-at-patsys-with-dirty-martinis-and-delicious-red-sauce/

Love this post! I will be sharing mine tomorrow: a New York restaurant with incredible ambiance, and I will make the case why it still matters!

Hi John, yes, ambience still matters to a lot of people. But some of the modern restaurants are to clinical for me. I look forard to reading your post.

I love a cozy booth, but it seems like they aren’t being used as much as in the past. Not too bright, but enough light to read the menu. Of course a great view. Your restaurant looks fantastic, very inviting.

Hi Tracy, it is ashame the cozy booths seem to be a thing of the past. One of our local restaurants is nothing more than a canteen and it echoes … a few dividers would make all the difference

Thanks for offering up a fun-to-think-about prompt! What I’m looking for is gentle lighting, comfy chairs (or cozy booths) with solid table spacing, attentive (but not overly-attentive) wait staff, yummy and well-portioned food, and good company 😉 What I’m not looking for are all the opposites 😉
Hope you have a wonderful weekend!

Hi Melissa, I love the idea of cosy booths. I know what you mean but I’ve not seen them here. Yes, and the attentive but not overly attentive waiting staff is another thing to factor in.

The sittings thing can be annoying – especially if the service has been slow. It seems to be quite common these days – an hour and a half usually. Cosy is good.

Hi trowel, thanks for stoping by. Haha… when we go to lunch/dinner it has been known for us to drink, eat and drink for 3 hours LoL especially at our local restaurante where it can take 30mins just to get through the apperitif. I will have to watch out for timed dining next time we are back in the UK.

Sounds like a fun blog ‘challenge’ I would like to participate in.
Good food, attentive but not over the top service, and good seating for my tall husband!

that’s great! Thankyou 🙂
The overattentive service is not something we have to worry too much here… except one restaurant with Indian or mabe Nepalese staff were so attentive they brought ALL our courses out at the same time. (Prawns, crab and octopus salad.) we share dishes. NExt time we went we ordered them one by one. LoL

Love eating out – especially long, long lunches. Methinks we would agree on similar places 🙂 ! I care more for the inside look rather than necessarily a view. A quiet, elegantly set out place with comfortable table settings some distance apart. The restaurant you found does invite . . . Bright lights > a huge ‘no’ and I have never been in a restaurant where TV was playing somewhere tho’ I have seen such on photos – YUCK! Don’t like places with ‘sittings’ either tho’, as I tend to be a late diner, I guess there would not be a ‘sitting’ after me . . .

Hey, EHA you sound like a woman after my own heart re Ambience. I don’t tend to be a late diner as I like time for my food to settle before retiring to bed.
TV’s in restaurants are VERY common here. Even the cosy restaurant I pictured had a TV but it wasn’t on. If footie or Motor GP is on I have to sit Mr. Piglet so he is not facing the screen. 🙂

Early diner here too. It’s very normal to me but others seem to like Spanish time!

I love when the ambience suits the locale, the food, and the time of day. Great post, Carole!

For me, what I am looking for in a restaurant depends on who I am dining with.

Yes, that is true. Especially if we go to a restaurant where there is live music. It doesn’t suit everyone.
