How Was Your Week?

If we were having coffee or something a little stronger, I’d tell you that it’s been another busy week and at times stressful.

A VISIT TO THE DOCTORS – Take 2

On Thursday, as I’d still not received an appointment to see a doctor and the pain in my hip was becoming unbearable at times, I decided to pluck up courage, drive to the health centre and queue to see the doctor for an emergency appointment.

On arriving at the Centre de Suade (Health Centre), several people were waiting outside and I was advised to take a ticket and join the queue. After a while, I wondered what the queue was for. The last time I joined a random queue on the beach with my daughter, when we got to the front, we were given a phone condom and a pair of Havaianas flip-flops. I plucked up the courage to ask in my best pigeon Portuguese if this was the queue for the doctor. Yes.

I waited, and when my number was called, the receptionist informed me that the doctor was Cuban and didn’t speak English. I shrugged. I am a master at charades, and a helpless smile goes a long way. Besides, I had already translated my symptoms into Portuguese which I’d printed off, and I had a voice translation app on my phone. I was reluctantly given an appointment.

By the time I got to see the doctor, I was physically shaking. “Eu stressado”, I said. I don’t know if stressado is a Portuguese word, but I took a gamble. The doctor smiled kindly. “Relax”, he said, and as I’d forgotten my glasses, I handed the piece of paper with my translated notes on and showed him the medication I was taking. We managed, and despite going for a pain in my hip best likened to a bad toothache, I came away with a prescription for three pages of blood tests, a cardiogram and two X-rays. At least he is thorough. We will see…

TAKING TIME OUT TO RELAX and Destress

Mr P keeps moaning that the pool was a waste of money and not worth the hassle of maintaining it. ‘you don’t swim’. Since my knee op, I find it painful to swim. I sigh. Give him the evil eye. Gentleman, you know the look. Don’t poke the bear.

One of my favourite ways to relax now is to float on my lilo, sipping a glass of wine or G&T

On a positive note, I managed to swim ten lengths a couple of weeks ago but that aggravated the pain in my hip. Don’t you just love getting old! NOT.

AZEA CHARITY LUNCH

Saturday, I attended a lunch to raise money for the local animal charity, AZEA. While it was fun to meet so many people, the noise level of the chatter as people struggled to make themselves heard made my ears bleed.

I never win at raffles. Never. Lady luck was on my side because my ticket numbers struck lucky 3 times.

IN THE NEWS

I can’t even begin to comprehend the craziness in the world right now, which I hope does not result in conflict. Sadly, I am becoming an ostrich to preserve my sanity. I have also realised that expressing an opinion is not PC because it could cause unintentional offence. What happened to let’s agree to disagree and move on?

I paint and bury my thoughts in the garden or throw them on the compost heap … Onwards

My Buddha painting is progressing slowly as my lessons have stalled until July.

How do you relax?

  1. Oh no, the hip sounds horribly painful. I hope it heals quickly. I dealt with that a few years back, and it would wake me up with deep pain. I really had to rest it for it to get better – floating with wine sounds like the perfect way to rest your hip AND relax. I’m full ostrich, other than the local weather report I’m finding myself not able to watch the news.

    1. Hi Tracy and fellow ostrich 🙂 thanks for stopping by. The pain does wake me up and you are right it is a deep pain. I am hoping rest is the cure. Although I still do line dancing for now.

  2. Oh Hip pain can be debilitating and my husband has a similar problem. Fortunately for us living in Australia our medical system works quite well and where we go to the local Clinic have little problem seeing our Doctor or another doctor if our one is not available. Our records are in their system which makes life easy for everyone. The pool looks so inviting and even relaxing by the pool is good for our mental health and wellbeing. Last week I worked on a Minecraft birthday cake project for my grandson and he and his friends thought it was really cool. Take care of yourself and sending hugs, Sue L xx

    1. Hi Sue, thanks for stopping by. Yep, the hip pain is a real bummer. I was doing so well with the exercise routines… and now I feel I am back to square one. Maybe I pushed myself too far. I should know what is causing it by the end of the month. The one big problem here is the language barrier. The Minecraft birthday cake sounds amazing

  3. I’m so glad you and the doctor were able to get through to each other 🙂 I know all about chronic pain and so hope you are finding ways to relieve it that feel good! Floating on your floatie in the pool sounds like a perfect answer! As for relaxation? Reading, music, crochet, and time in comfy hammock in the shade are at the top of my list. Hope your week ahead is a great one!

  4. I’m sorry to hear about your hip pain. I hope the Dr’s referrals will lead to a solution and pain relief for you soon. Your swimming pool looks beautiful and inviting. Congrats on the wine wins. Thank you for your weekend coffee share.

  5. I’m so sorry about your hip. I’m happy though that the doctor was thorough. Here’s hoping the tests will be able to direct you and the doctors towards some form of relief. Re political opinions, unfortunately here in the Netherlands “PC” is more commonly thrown around by the far right to silence minority groups than the other way around. For clarity’s sake, yes, I’m all for “agree to disagree and move on”.

    1. Hi Astrid, I am happy and surprised the doctor was thorough. But have you noticed wehre you are that doctors no longer physically examine you? the only benefits of not being able to speak Portuguese is that I dont understand the policies of the different parties.

  6. So sorry to hear about your hip, Carole. I hope the test results will conclude with a plan to address your discomfort. Pain wears a person out. I’m with you on keeping my political opinions to myself. I come to the blogosphere to get away from all of that. It’s always on social media and TV, it’s being discussed at coffee shops and restaurants, at family gatherings, at fuel stations, and even in the grocery store! The only way I can find to get away from it is to go for a walk by myself or to chill in my quiet office for a few hours in the early morning with a good book or the blogs I follow.

    1. hi Terry, yep the pain is begining to make me short tempered. It seems I master one physical challenge only to be presented with another. I am hoping you are still progressing well.

As for politics I refuse to discuss now and live each day as it comes. IT’s not that I don’t care more I care too much. Like you I find outlets elsewhere.

      1. I’m sorry to hear that about the pain. Being short-tempered is a normal reaction to chronic and worsening pain I’m thankfully progressing slowly but surely, now that I’m almost completely healed, Carole … the key being that it “is” progression.
I’m of the same mind as you with regards to caring about what’s going on in the world, and to me, continually focusing on it makes it all the more difficult to deal with on a personal level. It’s a well-known fact that stress slows healing and can cause even more problems in the human body.
Your job is to good care of you! 💕
