How Was Your Week?

This week, we’ve enjoyed rain—gallons of it—and, as the old saying goes, it’s raining cats and dogs. We desperately need more rain to replenish the depleted reservoirs, so I am not complaining. The only downside is that I need one day’s grace to catch up on all the laundry, get all the washing out on the line, and dry it, so if anyone above is listening…

Why cats and dogs? Quote: “Odin, the Norse god of storms, was often pictured with dogs and wolves, which were symbols of wind. Witches, who supposedly rode their brooms during storms, were often pictured with black cats, which became signs of heavy rain for sailors. Therefore, “raining cats and dogs” may refer to a storm with wind (dogs) and heavy rain (cats).“Cats and dogs” may come from the Greek expression cata doxa, which means “contrary to experience or belief.” If it is raining cats and dogs, it is raining unusually or unbelievably hard.”

Monday, we spent the day indoors, cosying up in front of the log fire. It wasn’t cold, although, at 17C (even at night), the grey skies and continuous rain made it feel colder. Brrrr. I braved one foray into the garden to find some bedraggled plants for the vase on Monday meme.

TRUMPET?

We also watched Donald Trump’s Inauguration on TV

Our reaction: ‘fascinating‘. What was yours?

I have no doubt the world will watch his plans unfold with bated breath. Even more reason why I try to avoid doom-scrolling which makes me anxious.

SURPRISING CUSTOMER SERVICE

The new set of resistance bands I ordered from Amazon a few weeks ago finally arrived.

Delighted to eventually receive the order, I opened the envelope to discover they had only included one band and not the pack as advertised. Groan. At €6, Mr. Piglet said it was not worth contacting Amazon Spain to complain. We don’t speak Portuguese, let alone Spanish. I persisted. It wasn’t the value but the principle!

We contacted Amazon Spain, and much to our surprise, an English-speaking human rang us back! The poor woman spent nearly 30 minutes on the phone trying to resolve the problem, as the goods were supplied by a third party. She finally found a solution, and we got a refund. Result.

Except I still need more bands, which were more expensive from DeCathlon than online.

ANYONE WATCHED THIS FILM?

I don’t watch much TV so I surprised my husband when I watched a film. Especially this one.

It’s weird, but after watching I no longer worry about getting old. The metaphor was not lost on me. We are what we are and my thoughts turned to all the women who have had plastic surgery to stay looking youthful and finally some resemble characters from a horror show. A better version of ourselves is who we are inside.

An award from Fitbit

I received an email from FitBit which made me laugh out loud. Seriously. It must have taken me ten years to achieve this. A tortoise would have gained more traction on step progress.

A NEW FRIEND

This week, I met up with one of my blog followers. She baked us some amazing healthy cookies (I begged the recipe) and gave me a tour of her garden, which is at least three times the size of mine. She has so many wonderful fruit trees that I experienced a slight twinge of envy—but not for long after seeing all the work involved. I’d always wanted extra land to grow more fruit and veg but now I am thankful our patch is the size it is.

DeCLutter and Cookery Books

As the rain has kept me from the garden, I have been decluttering. By chance, my attention turned to my collection of cookery and gardening books. I asked myself, “Do I really need that many when so much information is available online?” But then my mind wandered onto “WHAT IF?” What if, for some reason, there was no internet?

Have you met any of your blog followers or blogging buddies?

FINALLY, A NOTE TO BLOGGERS ON BLOGGER

Does anyone else experience a problem posting a comment on Blogger blogs? When I comment, I use my name and URL, and then I see a note. ‘Failed to publish try again later’. I try again. fail.

I try the Google account option. No luck. Fail

Anonymous – it works on occasion. I tried tonight. Fail

Sorry, guys. I’ve wanted to comment, but I am thwarted at every turn.

  1. I am never sure which button to push or what symbol I need so I can push the right button and hope. It’s getting too complicated in here, sadly. I long for the days when you signed up, got a title, posted an image, and you were in. forever. Blogger seems to be getting too complicated. Or I am. Maybe both.

  2. What a good week, a lot of rain, cozy at the fire and a meet-up. I have met a lot of my followers and co-bloggers. And looking forward to meet you soon. We got 112mm of rain in january so far, its more than welcome of course. Hope this week will be as good for you!

  3. Hi Carole, we have had Summer storms here in Australia and Odin must be very angry because there were damaging wind gusts, rain and hail. One house had a tree fall through but luckily no one was home. I don’t use the exercise bands as much as I should really. They provide another way to strength train and also you can pop them in your bag if you want to take them with you when you travel. I enjoyed reading about your week and am amazed you live in Portugal and not speak the language. My husband is Italian by birth and we have visited his family in Italy several times. I’m so fortunate to have him as he speaks Italian otherwise I would be lost because they speak so fast. Have a lovely week and hop you can join us for What’s Been On Your Calendar? this coming Friday and then next Monday for #WellnessReimagined. Thanks Sue L x

    1. Hi Sue, thanks for stopping by. You remind me I need to order more bands online. 🙂 I would like to start using wights but in the absense of a local gym I am loathed to embark on such a porject based on ignorance of how to ue them properly.

I have tried to learn the language but the majority of people here speak English.

thanks for the heads up re: What’s Been On Your Calendar? #WellnessReimagined I will check them out.

  4. Enjoy your rain! We got our first small storm in more than 8 months and we’re loving every drop. No one I know watched that orange POS felon or the inauguration. We refuse to refer to him as president just like we did the first time. He’s a horrible person surrounded by horrible people doing horrible things — not the least of which is killing off democracy. We fear for our country. It seems like everyone I’ve talked to is afraid for the future.

    1. Hi PR. I think the fresh smell of rain is amazing.

I don’t what to think about the guy and how he was even allowed to stand for president as a convicted felon. So yes, it must be tough for people who did not vote for hime. I am still trying to work out the appeal and why so many people voted for him. Maybe some of the topics he spoke about resonates with a lot of people especially on gender and immigration. I don’t know. I don’t understand Portuguee politics so I have no opinion and as for the UK PM he is, in my opinion, a wet lettuce.

      1. It seems that the only logical conclusion is that his association with musk somehow caused a stolen election. There was so much excitement for Kamala. Her rallies were packed with enthusiasm–his were barely attended. We think musk/russia bought the election. Why she conceded so fast and the Pres did nothing–is something we can’t figure out and it’s so disappointing. I fear for our kids and grandkids. Yes, we do live in limbo!

        1. I think Biden admitted this himself, but Ms. Harris was late into the running, and people just didn’t have time to get used to her. Also, I seriously doubted that a black woman would pass muster (or any woman, for that matter) these days. When I was coming out of the voting booth I overheard one man say to another, “Well, I guess we won’t have to have Kamala for president again…” NOBODY HAD A CLUE who she was.

      2. Ive said this before: education counts for a lot, and I think too many people still equate money with brains and disregard the fact that he could not form two full sentences. He trashes everything he touches. Sadly.

  5. I’m happy you got your much-needed rain, Carole. We’re still very much wanting here in the RGV. Severe drought persists in the region. Thanks for the movie recommendation. I like Demi Moore’s acting, so I’ll definitely check it out. I see that you watched it on YouTube. I’ve never watched a movie on YouTube. Do you need some kind of subscription to watch it there?

    1. Hi Terry, Yes, the rain is well appreciated even if it means my laundry is stacking up.
I never watched the film on YouTube, that is just a trailer.
The film is a little on the weird side but it made a change from my usual genre and it made me think. Demi Moore is a good actress and carries the story welll

  6. Hi, Carole – That sounds like a good week with much coziness. I used to have difficulties commenting on Blogger but it seems to be okay recently. I don’t follow many people of Blogger (I think just one) so that may be why. But WordPress!! Oh my goodness. I tried to write my Wellness Post yesterday. I always draft my posts right on WP. But yessterday, everytime I hit backspace, WP instantly deleted the paragraph before and then did not have it saved in my revisions. If anyone else has had this problem, I’d love to hear about it.
WIishing you a great week ahead. How is your pursuit of avoiding ultraprocessed foods going?

    1. Hi, it was a good week. Cozy is a good description. I also managed several Get Fit with Rick workouts to keep my activity levels up.
I have not had a problem with the backspace gremlin but I have others such has before I can leave a comment on other blogs I need to log in every time which is a pain.

The UPF journey is slow but I knew it would be a steep learning curve. Interesting I met a couple today in RL and they were already well travelled down that path and gave me lots of useful tips. IT’s great to talk to people who understand and have already done the grunt work re research etc.

    2. The one person I pop in on in Blogger I find it terribly difficult to leave a comment. The WP gremlins for me comes in the comment depart. And the two odd things that happen drive me a bit crazy but losing a post would drive me even more nuts. Bernie
