Foodie Friday: What are the Benefits of Cider Vinegar?

I am trying to lose weight by adopting a healthier lifestyle and eliminating processed carbs (or at least trying to). Part of my journey is experimenting with low-carb recipes and researching superfoods that have proven positive effects on the body.

A while back, a friend waxed lyrical about the benefits of cider vinegar. I bought a small bottle to appease her enthusiasm and promptly forgot about it. I was not about to take advice from someone who starved herself half to death and survived on a chemical cocktail of Zero Coke and Pepsi Max. However, a chance encounter with an article on my FB feed: ‘What Do Apple Cider Vinegar and Ginger Do to Your Body?’ caught my attention and enticed me down the foodie rabbit warren searching for information..

The key points I gleaned from the article were

Weight Loss & Management

Improved Digestion

Better Circulation

Detoxification

Then I got to the crux of the article—sigh—they were selling supplements!

Okay, I’m not a fan of taking supplements unless the brand is prescribed by my doctor and there are no natural food alternatives. There are too many bad actors in the business. Hooked by their claims, I dug deeper into the warren to glean more information based on medical research. (What are your thoughts on taking supplements?)

Anyway, I found an interesting article on Healthline that discusses belly fat and bloating and other interesting health benefits. Yep, sign me up. And they used the natural form, not supplements.

Apple cider vinegar has been used in cooking and natural medicine for thousands of years.

Many claim it has health benefits, including weight loss, improved blood sugar levels, relief from indigestion, and a decreased risk of heart disease and cancer.
With its many potential uses, it can be difficult to know how much apple cider vinegar to take each day. Dosage recommendations can vary, but taking 1–2 tablespoons (tbsp.), or 15–30 milliliters (mL), of apple cider vinegar with water before or after meals may be beneficial.
This article outlines how much apple cider vinegar you should drink for different health benefits, as well as the best ways to avoid side effects.

Other sites claim it is good for Fatty Liver disease.

Note: I also add slithers of raw ginger to my daily pre-breakfast cider vinegar drink. Ginger apparently also has numerous health benefits. I will cover this another time. I’m also trying to figure out how to grow my own.

Have you tried cider vinegar as part of your dieting/health regime – if so what were the results?

  1. I’ve never really gotten into apple cider vinegar, although I do hear occasionally it’s good for one. I don’t take supplements of any kind. I try to just eat fresh or local food and non processed items.

    1. Hi Bernie, fresh local food sounds good. Simple is best. I was only taking the cider vinegar to speed up my metabolism and help with bloating. IT’s surpising when you look at processed items just how many additives and other nasties they have in them.

  2. I drink apple cider vinegar every day, blended in water, especially before a meal with sugar or starch. My goal is to keep the blood sugar level as even as possible, that is very good for my health. The liver can do its job and stop storing fat.

    1. That’s interesting, you take it before a meal with sugar or starch. I only take it once a day before breakfast. I read it helps with fatty liver. How long have you been taking it and how long before you saw any results?

      1. I started two years ago together with other hacks from the Glucos goddess. Saw result quickly. This spring I started with intermittent fasting and this summer my body really learned how to switch between sugar burning and fat burning systems. Can also recommend Dr Mindy Pelz on YouTube she explains so much I wish I learned many yrs ago.

  3. We have some apple cider vinegar in the cupboard. Occasionally I put it on my chips!

    😊

    I don’t take suppliments.

I heard it said that all you are doing by taking vitamins is creating expensive urine.

Took me two seasons to get a decent crop of ginger.

There are numerous videos on YouTube.

If you buy some from the fruit and veg shop make sure it has little growth points and before you plant it soak it in water overnight in case it has been sprayed with a growth inhibitor.

I started mine off in 2ltr ice cream tubs in my shed until the soil outside had warmed sufficiently.

You don’t need much soil, just enough to cover the ginger.

Water lightly and wait for the green shoots to appear. This might take a while. Be patient.

Then you can plant it out.

    1. Thanks, Art. Your comment “I heard it said that all you are doing by taking vitamins is creating expensive urine.” made me laugh. I was perscribed Vit D by my doctor. Can you believe bloodtests revealed I had a vitamin D deficency and I live in the sun?

Thanks for the tips on growing ginger. I will give it a try.

      1. As you know, I also live in a sunny climate. Vit D deficiency does seem a bit odd under such circumstances
What were the outward signs you showed of Vit D deficiency?

          1. I read the link. It contained quite a lot of “maybe” which raised am eyebrow.
It stated two of the natural sources are egg yokes and white mushrooms and coincidentally I eat a two egg (free range) mushroom omlette most mornings for breakfast. And, like you, I spend time in the garden most days.
That said, I would be interested to know if I am Vit D deficient.

  4. I’ve not tried it, but lately I’ve been looking into it, so your post is very timely, Carole. I take Calcium Citrate for my bones, and a super B complex vitamin for metabolism, energy and enhanced immune response, among other reported benefits of B complex.

    1. Hi Terry, I used to take the calcium tabs you dissove in water (perscribed by the doctor). You have now reminded me maybe I should ask if I should continue. Same with vit B. Do you find the B complex vitamins effective?

If you do try the cider vinegar please let me know how you get on.

      1. I believe the B complex have helped in many ways. I very seldom catch a cold or virus, have good energy levels and I do believe it assists my metabolism. I’ll be sure to let you know how it goes with the acv.
