This week, I was scooping up dead leaves and cuttings from my tomato plants to put in a bag for disposal. Without thinking, I removed my gloves to better photograph the blight-infected leaves. I was uncurling one of the leaves to frame the picture when I saw it move, and this thing that looked like an alien life form crawled out. Oh boy, did I scream! Did you hear me scream?
My friend tells me spiders can hear. Really – who knew? I’ve probably deafened the poor little critter.

I immediately posted a picture to the Wildlife in Portugal FB group and its identity was confirmed as a Garden orbweaver – Araneus diadematus or A. pallidus.
Look at its spiky legs! Have you ever seen such a weird spider?

Trigger warning: Studying all the different spiders before going to bed is not a good idea. https://birdwatchinghq.com/spiders-of-portugal/

Ugh. Not a fan of icky creatures at all. I would also have screamed!

Thank you 🙂 I am glad I’m not alone. You probably have scarier critters where you live.

Nothing too crazy here in the Canadian prairies.

IT didn’t look like a spider to me. Took me hours to identify on line.

Absolutely brilliant. So pleased you managed a photograph. Well done!

Yes, I surprised myself considering my hands were shaking because at that point I had no idea what it was.

I detest spiders and our daughter is positively arachnophobic. Although I likely wouldn’t have screamed, you’d have heard our daughter from miles away.

I’m with your daughter. AND I should never look at spiders on line just before I go to bed LoL

I can understand why you were startled.

Enlarge the image and the critter would make a brilliant sci fi creature
