Weekend Coffee Share – Earthquake, Family, Food and Tourists!

The past couple of weeks have been hectic. Our family from France has been staying, so it was all hands on deck with shopping and preparation before they arrived and piles of laundry and sweeping sand from every nook and cranny once they left. Still, it keeps us fit, and spending time with them is great. I also get to go to the beach. I love feeling the sand between my toes, and I do miss my beach walks and just taking myself off to the beach to watch the sunset. Mr. Piglet detests sand, and with my walking disability, I am nervous to go alone just in case I fall. It would bring a whole new meaning to saving a ‘grounded whale.’

Earthquake! On Monday 26th August at 05.11, everyone in the house (except me) was woken by the grumbles of an earthquake as the ground shook. We later discovered that the earthquake registered a magnitude of 5.3 on the Richter scale. The epicentre was approximately 60km west of Sines. (see below for full report). The last earthquake I felt several years ago was during the day, and everything in the house shook, and the wardrobe doors rattled!

Food: In the evening, we all went to Pizzeria Italiana Pomodorino, a pizza restaurant. The waitress was surly, and because they were so busy, the waiter was asked to stop serving tables and help in the kitchen. This would have been fine, except his long hair flounced over the food.

My daughter and I ordered a chicken pollo salad and a pizza to share. Our pizza had a soggy base. I am not meant to eat carbs, so if I do fall off the carb wagon, it will be for something I enjoy eating. I had a couple of mouthfuls, then scraped off the topping. Great pizza, not. To be fair, the other 3 pizzas the family ordered were okay. It was obviously not my night because the salad was swimming in grease at the bottom, and the lettuce was wilted and dead. The chicken …what we could find … was hard, brown and scraggy.

Again, I couldn’t eat it. Sigh … needless to say, we will never return, not just for the food but for the questionable hygiene in the kitchen and surly service.

On a positive food note, we ate in other restaurants during their stay, which not only had fantastic views but also delicious food and service.

Another positive is that I stuck to my pledge not to drink alcohol for three months. It was tough! My son-in-law bought me a present! A bottle of alcohol-free wine, which I eeked out for 3 days. What a star!

On the day they left, I cooked the Zucchini Bake, and thankfully, my version passed muster with my daughter as I tweaked their recipe.

We were sad to see them go, but we will get together again for Christmas, my Birthday and New Year.

Tourists: We live in a tourist area, and they drive me crazy. Why do some people come on holiday and leave their brains, manners and respect at home? Enough said.

Diet and Exercise: I tried hard to adhere to the low-carb diet; while I succumbed to the temptation of a dessert when we ate out, I did resist the numerous pastel de natas and croissants my son-in-law returned with every day when he went to buy bread. And I tried to maintain my walking regime every day which was tough.

Needless to say, I never had my Wednesday weigh-in this week. Psychologically, I could not cope with a potential weight gain. I know I lapsed occasionally on desserts and ate chips and bread, so fingers crossed, the extra calories did not impact my weight too much.

  1. How wonderful to get back to the beach! It sounds like you had a great time visiting with family. It is so hard to stick to healthy eating when special occasions and eating out crop up.

  2. Great to have family visit and help out. Your son-in-law wins for the gift of non alcoholic wine! It is so hard to maintain good eating habits surrounded by special occasions. I eat salad out a lot and ask them to hold the dressing and bring it on the side. That way I control it. But yuck greasy lettuce.

    1. Yeah, my son-in-law is French and knows how much I LOVE wine and could feel my pain. Good point about the dressing and salad. I never gave it a thought as restaurants usually just give you oil and vinegar. Lesson learned for the future.

  3. Ooh, when I order a salad in a restaurant, I’m always hoping it will be fresh. So disappointing when it’s not! It’s never as fresh as from my garden though. 😦 My sympathies.

    1. TBH I rarely order a salad in a restaurant because they vary so much. and I always feel cheated at the cost. You are right they are never as fresh as the salad we grow. As you probably can see from other posts I am an enthusiastic gardener.

    1. Hi Laurie, one glance in the mirror is enough to remind me to try and stay on track when the family are here. 🙂 but I confess when they were all eating pastel de nata tarts (they are the Portuguese version of custard tarts) I nearly caved in.

      1. It’s a complicated subject, don’t you think? Cheese violently disagrees with Mick but sometimes he can get away with a small amount, cooked. It’s in his head now so he just steers clear. He drinks coffee black, as do I, though I risk the occasional meia de leite. Sends me scurrying to the loo though so I don’t do it often.

        1. It is complicated. I tried cutting out dairy for a while as I was told it is not good for inflammation. As for coffee, I tried all sorts of variations of milk. Almond, rice and soya … and even made my own oat milk.

Ho hum. the hoops we jump through to try and stay healthy.

  4. I’m sorry to hear about the bad experience at that restaurant. I hate when that happens. I rarely go out for a meal and when I do I want it tio be an experience to remember. ..but wonderful to spend time with your family. I’m happy to read about the beach trip. I too enjoy to feel the sand between my toes. My daughter and I had plans to visit the Baltic Sea next weekend, but she felt that it would be too much and I cancelled the trip yesterday. Well, well.. there’s so much to do at this time of the year so maybe it was a good thing 🙂 Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

    1. Hi Maria, what a shame about your plans for the Baltic Sea trip Hopefully you will get there before the winter sets in. I confess we do eat out quite a lot … I am a foodie. LoL.

The beach trip was wonderful. Just a shame I can’t go in the sea. Maybe next year when I am fitter. 🙂

  5. How nice that you’ve had family visiting, Carole. Those can be the most difficult times to stay with any kind of food restrictions. It sounds like you did very well. Big congratulations for keeping yourself away from alcohol for three months. That’s another great achievement, especially because wine seems to be the adult beverage of choice with so many meals in so many countries. It sounds as though you have a good grip on what you need to do to maintain and improve your health. Just carry on and don’t be too hard on yourself.

    1. Hi Terry, thank you so much for the encouragement. I am trying so hard to lose weight but it doesn’t want to budge. It sticks to me like glue!

Wine is social here and in France. We usually take with meals so it is particularly hard when everyone around you is enjoying wine. Water doesn’t quite cut it LoL

Keeping to an exercise routine does help me keep focused on calorie burn and building strength is my legs and stamina.
