What Vegetables are Growing in My Garden – 24-08-24?

It doesn’t seem possible that September is only a week away. Our vegetables grow weary from the continued sea mist which shrouds us in a cloud, and the sun plays peek-a-boo as the mist retreats only to return later.

1. Courgettes (Zuchinni)

This is the last offering of courgettes. The leaves have white mould and other nasties. The next job on my list is to remove the leaves and wait for the final courgettes to develop before discarding the plants.

Zucchini – (Courgette) Calbacin Abobrinha – F1 Diamant

According to the instructions, the seeds can be planted throughout the year except in September or October. I’m not sure why. They are vigorous and should be planted in deep, rich soil.

2. My Last Cucumber

The last cucumber

Cucumber Seedlings – Pepino Longo de China

I planted these on 27/7. They have smooth skins. The packet suggests planting by the end of June. This will be my autumn crop … she says with her fingers firmly crossed.

3. Seed Share – Black Tula Beefsteak Tomatoes – Update

I planted the seeds on March 24th, and they took forever to germinate.

By the 26th of July, they had not progressed much in 4.5 months, and I wondered if it was time to abandon the project because their progress was so slow it was painful to watch. Fred, the French Gardener, pleaded for patience.

FINALLY 23rd August! There is one tomato. At this rate we will finally (hopefully) be harvesting tomatoes in? … October or maybe even Christmas!

4. Aubergines

These continue to grow well, but looking at the colour of the leaves, I think they need feeding. Note to self: Add to the ‘To Do’ list.

5. Yellow Peppers

I bought the yellow pepper seed plugs from the local market at the end of February and started harvesting in July. Young peppers are still starting to develop, so it’s almost a challenge to keep feeding and watering to see how late the last pepper is picked before the plants start to die off.

6. Growing Lettuce in Pots

The lettuce are running to seed. Time to dispose and start again.

The latest seed plugs were planted in late July.

That’s my six for this week’s Six on Saturday

  1. There’s still a lot of life left in your garden 🙂 Those pepper plants could live though the winter. I know people in warmer climates that keep them over winter. I’ve had bell peppers well into December when I lived in California. You got this!

    1. Maria, you remind me. Yes we still had new peppers forming on the plants very late last year. When our family leaves (they are here on vacation at the moment) I must take them in hand and give them some tlc with liquid manure feed.

    1. it is the variety. I am just relieved I started the season with cherry tomatoes. I just hope all my toms ripen before the blight sets in. The humidity is so high at the moment that the moisture on the leaves is playing havoc. AND the temps have dropped to 20c which is unusual.

    1. Hi Laurie, yes the growing season is year round. But our growing season is far longer in terms of some fruit and vegetables compared to 7kms away in the valley where they get frost.

Today we went to the market and they were selling seedlings for carrot, onions, 10 different types of cabbages, beetroot, cauliflower , celery, Brussel sprouts, 4 different types of lettuce, kale etc.that will be our winter crop

  2. You’ve done extremely well with your container garden! I tried once many years ago, and if I recall correctly, all of my pots were first drowned and then baked rock hard while we were away on vacation and I never attempted it again. I don’t believe I harvested a single thing. Something I’ve never tasted is eggplant. How do you prepare it?

    1. Hi Terry, when we go on vacation friends kindly water our pots and look after our garden. I am not sure how we would manage without them.

Egg plant I usually add to lasagne or use in ratatouille. That said, I need to get creative and try other recipes.

  3. A lot of tasty vegetables ! Here too it is the end of the cucumbers. I pulled out the last plant and half of my indoor tomatoes (greenhouse) yesterday. I envy your aubergines so clean and developed and I´m happy for the tomatoes that you had to wait so long for.

    1. it’s strange that the y one season I neglect my vegetables because we have been away or had so many visitors and have been frugal with water is the season they have been most productive.

it is strange the aubergines grow so well here. Maybe it is the variety.

i forgot to mention we are on the second batch of cucumber plants and they are just beginning to produce baby cucumbers.

the greenhouse must be a bonus

  4. All these veggies, plus potatoes, are currently seedlings, (except for cucumbers) at my spot and most will be planted out within the next fortnight.

I guess I should post some pics?

    I’m envious of your aubergines.

For some reason I have never produced even a half decent crop and my missus does love them.

Maybe this season I’ll be more fortunate?
