Wildflowers in Portugal – Wild Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare)

Another Wild Wednesday. This week, I feature wild fennel, Foeniculum vulgare.

Everywhere I look, I see wild fennel. Apparently, you can use it for cooking, but although there is an abundance growing on the land near our property, so far, I’ve not been tempted.

The Let’s Eat Weeds website offers interesting references to how and when to harvest, plus suggested uses of seeds and leaves. In the same link, they also mention the deadly hemlock.

HEMLOCK

NB, be mindful of Hemlock, which looks similar to Fennel. Although the flowers are white, the seedheads can easily be mistaken for fennel. Hemlock is one of the most poisonous plants in the world!

Do you enjoy photographing wildflowers, bugs, birds, snakes, and other curiosities in the wild?

I decided to revisit the meme I created ‘Wild Wednesday”, where I share a photograph of wild flora or fauna in my local Parque Natural do Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina area. Why not join me, share your photo on your blog, and leave a link in the comments below.

  1. I love Portugal! I have visited the Algarve on several occasions and the Lisbon area from Badajoz in Spain.

Beautiful photos of nature. I love going out for walks and taking photos of insignificant things. Taking photos of animals in peace, calm sea, nature is extraordinary. I would like to travel through that area with my camera 🙂 .

Here in the south of Spain we have many beautiful places to photograph as well. But sometimes you have to travel to see new places.

    Thanks

    1. Have you travelled to the Western ALgarve and the natural Park. IT is truly a place of the soul. I remember we went to Nerja for a winter sun holiday many years ago. It was lovely and relaxing but so different.

  2. As you know by my blog, things in nature are among my favourites to photograph. The flower heads of the wild fennel look similar to those of cultivated dill. Apparently, although their flavour is different, they can be used interchangeably. I read that we also have wild fennel here in Saskatchewan. I’ve yet to see it, but will be watching for it now that I’ve read your post.

    1. I have only grown dill once and sadly it died long before it flowered. Living in a natural park area we are fortunate to have plenty of wildlife, flowers, and stunning scenery to enjoy and photograph. I keep promising to take my camera. I must. My phone’s camera is useless.
