#WeekendCoffeeShare – A.I Content and Street Art

Are you sitting comfortably? Do you take your coffee with or without sugar? Or maybe you would like something stronger?

When we were in Annecy, France, a couple of weeks ago, I was heartened to see this street art in one of the back streets by a cafe. The artists were protesting about the use of AI. Hallelujah!

Are the days of true authors, writers, and graphic artists numbered with the rapid advance of AI-generated content?

My collaborator and I don’t use AI, and we mention this in the book blurb: NO AI CONTENT, GUARANTEED. This is all original work by D. L. Keur and Carole Hill.

But how many people use AI? To me, using AI-generated content sidesteps the magic of the creative process.

Why would people labour over a book for months or even years with blood, sweat and tears when they can churn it out in under a day, using AI for cookie-cutter books to turn a quick buck. But where’s the pride and passion in that? Where’s their moral compass calling themselves authors? FB is riddled with such people asking for shortcuts. There isn’t any. If they do this, there should be a separate section on Amazon.

Check out an article published by The Hill: Generative AI is generating astronomical profits by trampling authors and publishers

A.I. is also being used to create audiobooks and podcasts.

The same goes for blog posts. Maybe non-AI bloggers should identify themselves.

Out of curiosity, I attended an AI course, and I then churned out the post below in just a few seconds.

Maximizing Your Garden’s Potential in February

February is a crucial time for gardeners to prepare for the upcoming growing season. Here are some essential tips and tools to maximize your garden’s potential:

1. Planning and Preparing

  • Review Your Garden Layout: Take time to review your garden layout and consider any changes or improvements you’d like to make.
  • Order Seeds and Plants: Research and order seeds and plants suited for your region and desired garden design.
  • Prepare Your Soil: If weather permits, begin preparing your soil by adding compost and organic matter.

2. Pruning and Maintenance

  • Prune Trees and Shrubs: Remove dead or diseased branches from trees and shrubs to promote healthy growth.
  • Inspect Garden Structures: Check trellises, fences, and other garden structures for damage and make any necessary repairs.

3. Essential Tools

  • Pruning Shears: Invest in a high-quality pair of pruning shears for accurate and clean cuts.
  • Hand Trowel: A hand trowel is essential for transplanting seedlings and small plants.
  • Soil Thermometer: Consider purchasing a soil thermometer to monitor soil temperature for proper planting times.

4. Start Seedlings Indoors

  • Begin starting seeds indoors for plants that require a longer growing season, such as tomatoes and peppers.

5. Focus on Pest and Weed Control

  • Research natural and organic methods for pest and weed control to minimize the need for harsh chemicals.

By following these essential tips and using the right tools, you can set the stage for a successful and thriving garden throughout the year.

  1. I believe that the reason why we enjoy art whether it is in the form of art or writing is that it’s created by people. I love to learn the creative process and what went on their head. AI can never achieve that. I think AI could be a good writing partner giving you feedback but not for the entire creative process.

  2. I agree. I think about this often when it comes to photographs…people can just put in what they want and a photo is generated. Using A.I. to write, I believe, will “dumb us down”. No need to really think for yourself. I’m sure it has some good qualities, I’m not sure what they are yet.

  3. Thank you for your weekend coffee share. I think no-AI personal bloggers will continue to draw readers who enjoy reading general content of human interest. They typically have followers and regular readers who like their writing style and topics.

  4. Being a rather quirky sort, I’d always thought myself inimitable. However, over the last few days, AI has come up a bit and I’m starting to feel a tad concerned. What are we creating and do we know? Laziness has never been seen as a human virtue and by relying on AI, we’re sure to come a cropper sooner or later, but what will the cost of that be and what will be the human cost along the way? If you’re in a very high paid job and they can get a machine to do your job, well I’d be worried. Many of the caring professions are not well paid but I would think it would be hard for AI to take them over. I was recently out for dinner and our meals arrived on a robot and I felt sorry for the poor young person who might’ve had that job and we might have exchanged a smile and a few words. I also wonder how AI goes with making people laugh? Smile? These are important too.

Our world is certainly troubled, but I still end each day going through what I’m grateful for and the troubles of the world seem to slip away as I fall asleep.

    Best wishes,

    1. Hi Rowena, I also believe society will ‘come a cropper’ one day as people become more and more reliant on AI insead of using their brains and developing their own talents. There is no doubt in my mind AI bots and whatnots will replace some jobs. IT’s the same with self-service tills in supermarkets.

      I wrote about it here

      https://pigletinportugal.com/2024/01/19/self-service-checkouts/

And Robots replacing waiting staff … it is a sad day.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I appreciate it.
