SoS: Succulents – A Tour of My Garden

I am addicted to succulents and committed to creating a drought-tolerant garden, which is just as well because we will have a hosepipe ban this summer. The drought situation is critical, and restrictions are already in place in the Eastern Algarve. Let’s just hope all the tourists who arrive in their hoards this summer refrain from taking twenty-minute showers while the rest of us bathe in a bucket of water, which we will then share with our plants.

At the moment, heavy rain is pounding on the roof and gurgling in the gutters. I’m not sure about Six on Saturday, but it has taken six hours of dodging the showers (or not) to amass these photographs of our succulent garden.

  1. Enter. Bem Vindo! The succulent bed to the side of the driveway has been established over many years.

2. View of the side succulent border from the back garden. As you can see, we have some VERY tall Yuccas that are now growing far too tall to remove the dead leaves. They are not called leaves but the word escapes me at the moment.)

3. The path to the house is lined with more succulents in pots.

4. Rain, glorious rain!

5. Pool Rockery

6. Side succulent area

I don’t know how many different types of succulents I have. One day, I must count and label them.

PS

Gardening question of the week. Has anyone tried Hot Composting? If so, What were the results and did you buy the bin or improvise and make it yourself?

That’s my six for this Saturday, folk! Do check out other Six on Saturday gardeners over at Jim’s blog.

  1. Lovely collection! It is proof of concept that one can have a beautiful garden that is compatible with your climate and surroundings. Funny when I lived in San Diego, I was not at all interested in succulents. Now I live in Wisconsin and am fascinated by them, though I do not have a good spot to grow them. I have a lot of Tillandsia though as houseplants and thye are very fun toey

    1. Hi, like you I had no interest in succulents until we came here. In the UK I grew masses of perenials with bright splashes of colour that needed lots of water. In our corner of Portugal our garden is more year round. I never discovered the beauty of cacti and succulents until someone showed me their garden and tsome of the beautiful flowers the succulents/cacti offer. AND of course, once the bed is established needs very little mintenance.

    1. We’ve only had heavy showers for just over a week and already the grey skies and wet make for a dreary mood. I want to get in the garden, plant seeds and transplant seedlings but they will get flattened by the ehavy rain. I feel for you guys in the UK who have to suffer months of this.

  2. Love the agave attenuata ! but I think I remember saying this in the past. Only in Portugal, Spain or Italy can you really create and develop a succulent plant area. Unfortunately it’s too wet here in winter ( or should I grow them all on a sandy rockery mount ? I have to think about this… 🤔
