This poem is dedicated to the wonderful selection of insects we have in our garden.
The Ugly Bug Spring Jive
by PiP
With the Herald of Spring the bugs start to arrive
in my Garden of Eden for the “Ugly Bug Jive”.
The weird and the ugly they give me the jitters
who may I ask created these critters?
There are black bugs and green bugs and stripey ones too
perhaps they’ve escaped from the Ugly Bug zoo?.
Grasshoppers and spiders arrive at my door
the Jive’s in full swing so they take to the floor.
The Ugly Bug Jive is now the “In” thing
and a great way to cheer, the arrival of Spring.
The birds, snakes and lizards come looking for lunch
The “Ugly Bug” guests look an appetising bunch…
hmmmmm
Gobble gobble!
Okay, now that is just . . . . weird.
Do you happen to remember the old sitcom, ‘The Beverly Hillbillies’? They supposedly lived just a few blocks from where one of my editors works; but their hometown was ‘Bug Tussle’. That by itself is odd, but what is even more odd is that there are four towns in American with that name. One in Texas and another in Alabama are spelled as ‘Bug Tussle’. One in Kentucky and one in Oklahoma are spelled as ‘Bugtussle’. I was looking for a vacation home near Bugtussle in Oklahoma. No one really knows where the Clampets (the Beverly Hillbillies) were originally from.

Ha! Mr. Drysdale’s bank was right on Willshire Boulevard! There were those weird painted on palms in the background. I know my palms rather well, but have never been able to identify those.

Thanks, Debbie. The bugs were certainly having a party in my garden when I composed that poem 🙂
