On This Day – 31st May 2019 – Pet Peeves: Plastic Packaging and Microplastics

On this day, 31st May 2019, I was moaning about plastic packaging. Why are fruit and veg packaged in plastic? Shrinkwrapped cucumbers. Seriously? Grapes, kiwis, apples, tomatoes, leeks, mushrooms, etc.

Meat packaged in plastic.

Now we even have microplastics in food

Interesting info by National Geographic

Seven years later (is it really that long?), and nothing much has changed. I try to choose non-packaged fresh food, but it is almost impossible.

What about you?

  1. Our local supermarket seemed to be really trying to use a lot less plastics. When non-plastic wrapped items were available, I opted for them – but now they have gone back to using more plastics. Why? I don’t understand it.

    1. His sarsm, I hear you. For a while the plastic message seemed to be getting through but as you say plastic is back in fashion. And despite my vow not to buy products packaged in plastic I often don’t have a choice.

  2. Very much share your pet peeve! Here Down Under the plastics/microplastics saga is much talked about – my supermarket (one of the two largest chains in the country) seems to be trying and every move is welcome . . . in addition, ‘imperfect’ fruit and vegetables are much more on sale now instead of tragically going onto the farmers’ rubbish heaps and that loose from big bins at a much lower price . . . and, naturally everybody is honing in on such :) !

Hi Eha, what a great idea! I wish more shops would do that.

  3. My pet peeve is that here in Canada, we have to use reusable cloth bags in the grocery store, but almost every item we put into that bag is, as you say, packaged in plastic.
