How Was Your Week? I Need More Than a Coffee

If we were having coffee, I’d tell you that while it’s been ‘one of THOSE weeks’ where despite the constant rain, doom, gloom, and political shenanigans where you thought ‘things’ couldn’t get any worse until DT insulted Nato troops and for once Kier Starmer grew a pair and stood up to the orange peril, I somehow remained upbeat. Yep, I kept the Positive Notes tin topped up.

Endoscopy and Colonoscopy

The appointment I should have had in December, which they cancelled because I was taking antibiotics, finally went ahead on Wednesday. When the nurse asked if I was nervous, I immediately said no. I don’t think he was expecting a no and looked surprised! I just wanted to be done with it.

Fortunately, they knock you out, so the last thing I remember was the Anaesthetists asking me to look at him and not shut my eyes. The next thing I knew, I was awake, and the monitors beside me in the recovery room were bleeping rhythmically.

What alarmed me as I came around was that the Anaesthetists asked me if I was aware I had sleep apnea. How did he arrive at that conclusion? No, I wasn’t aware. I looked up the symptoms when I got home, and it explained a lot, such as the tiredness during the day and disturbed sleeping patterns. I should have asked if I needed to see a doctor or if it was dangerous. I am debating whether to see a doctor or if I will end up on yet another treadmill of more tests and pills. That’s the problem with private healthcare. You become a cash cow.

They took five biopsies from my oesophagus to check for cancer cells, but I won’t get the results for 3 weeks. For now, I am trying to put it out of my mind.

On the way home from the hospital, we decided to have a meal as I’d not eaten for nearly 24 hours, and while my throat ached, I was famished. I fancied pasta. All our usual haunts were closed for the winter, so we ended up at a place called Portifinos at the Marina. Of course, I had a Pornstar Martini with my pasta. Perfect!

Games Night and Memories

On Friday, we had friends around for a supper and games night. One of the card games (Old Maid), they suggested I hadn’t played since I was a child with my Nana, who sadly passed away when I was about 9.

It brought back fond memories and reminded me how simple life was back then. Simple pleasures. When I was a child, the highlight of our family’s week was when my Dad got paid on a Friday night and returned home with a couple of large bars of milk chocolate or a bag of mixed sweets to share. A treat.

Random thoughts

Obesity today

Thinking about my childhood, one thought led to another as I tried to remember whether there were as many fat people back then. I am sure there wasn’t. We ate wholesome food, sweet treats were a luxury, and there was no ultra-processed food. I searched for obesity statistics but came up blank on the time frame.

Politics

This guy is a leader with vision

I won’t waste oxygen on trumpet because, after his outrageous lies and shenanigans this week, I would not know where to start. I hope they don’t allow the USA to host the FIFA World Cup games.

Moving on.

The weather.

Diet and Exercise

So far, I have managed to maintain the 2.5kg weight loss thanks to the Endoscopy prep. Early days, but I remain hopeful. And the unintentional intermittent fasting is helping. I now try not to eat after 18.30 and then again until about 10.30-11 am when breakfast becomes lunch. I found that this has helped control my heartburn and bloating, and I’m not hungry.

I confess I am struggling to maintain my daily step count thanks to the weather. Yep, I know it is an excuse. But, I am maintaining the knee exercises in training to get up and down from the floor.

How was your week? Any thoughts on the political landscape? Card games, intermittent fasting, life when you were growing up etc.?

My thanks to Natalie for hosting the Weekend Coffee Share even if she is taking a break this week.

  1. Whilst Trump may be far from perfect, God did save him from that bullet so he could lead a while longer, blocking that maniacal abortion loving Harris. Trump is all for keeping Christian teachings in schools, unlike over here …

  2. Oh, I’m glad the procedure is over – and best thoughts for those tests to come back with zero alarm! That drink looks soooo good, and pasta was a great choice for your sore throat. Yuck, he is the worst – everything about him.

I think we didn’t have as many choices for junk when we were young, that’s true. When the weather warms up it will get all of us outside more – always a good thing!

  3. It’s great that you are on the other side of those tests. I hope the results are on your side when you do get them.
I try to not get too worked up over the politics. I do make sure to listen to the news a couple times a day to keep informed and know what to expect…

    1. Thanks, Maria. I am trying not worry about the results but I am a worry worm.

Same here … but sometimes it’s just too awful to comprehend.

  4. As much as possible, I stay away from making political and religious online comments, Carole. Actually it’s the same for me in face to face discussions. I’ve practiced this for years and it’s saved me a lot of stress. Sending wishes for negative biopsy results and continued health improvements. You’re already doing so well with trying new lifestyle things. I’ve done intermittent fasting for years, and it has mostly served me well in terms of maintaining weight loss. Good for you for continuing to work on getting down to and up from the floor! You’ll never regret that.

  5. Carney’s speech is popular stateside too. I too hope the World Cup and the Olympics gets cancelled in the US. The Olympics is in LA, though there is infrastructure to have the athletes here, a lot of people have lost of their homes from the fire last year. Most people in LA would rather focus their energy and resources rebuilding those communities hosting the games.

  6. 100% get your sleep apnea looked into. Once you have a CPAP machine your sleep and your life will feel so much better. Fingers crossed for negative biopsy results. Life can be full of challenges so good for you on the intermittent fasting, wt loss and knee exercises.
As to dumpster tRump it’s hard to avoid all his BS but sadly it is not going to get better. Kidnapping a countries leader, bombing boats in international waters and countries left right and center is just a start. Sadly.
OK off the soap box. Have a good week.

    1. Thanks, Bernie. I had a quick look at the CPAP machine and it looks quite a contraption to sleep with. Did you always have to lie on your back?

As for the orange fella he must be mentally unstable. But there you go. I wonder what his next dummy spit will be.

yhe correct knee and hip exercises have really helped and IF (a big if) I can crack the weight loss) that will also help.
