At the end of the year, or should I say the beginning of the new one, I only made one resolution: Learn to live and enjoy the moment. Today, the sun was shining, and the birds were singing. I inhaled the moment and decided that, rather than exercising in front of my computer with ‘Get Fit with Rick’, I would take a walk and soak up some much-needed vitamin D.
All was going well until a woman pushing her bike emerged from a gate, followed by a little terrier-type dog who rushed out running straight across the road to greet me. I shouted at the stupid woman as we were by the exit of a roundabout, and the dog was in danger of being hit by a car. The said woman was totally oblivious.
Without acknowledging the dog or me, she rode off. Her poor dog trailing behind her without a leash. What gets my goat is that if the poor dog had been hit by a car, it would no doubt be the motorist’s fault. I see numerous posts on our local FB group complaining about motorists. Doh! Be a kind and responsible owner: When walking your dog on the road, keep it on a leash.
Sigh … take a deep breath, Piglet.

Yeah, I see this too – we have a walking path next to our house. There are plenty of great owners who do properly care, but one or two bad ones that have a complete lack of awareness.

Hi Tracy, we live next to a natural park so there are plenty of areas for dogs to run free. Yep, there are plenty of great owners who like Maria (below) whose dogs are on leases have to suffer the stupidy and selfishness of others.

So true! I do not have a dog at the moment. A few years ago when I was walking my extremely well mannered german shepherd, on a leash, a woman yelled at me from far away asking if my dog was on leash and if I had it under control. I thought she was scared so I said , “yes of course”. Then she said “Good I don’t have my two dogs under control” and at the same time two smaller dogs ran up to us biting my poor girl and jumping all over her. I told my dog to stay put and guard my daughter and grabbed the woman’s dogs, one in each hand and carried them over to her. People are weird.

MAria, that is awful! Such an inconsiderate and stupid woman. If anyone’s dogs should have been on leash it should have been hers.

Naturally fully agree. Sadly I do not have a dog at the moment, but, to the best of my knowledge, all pets in Australia have to be leashed in public and every owner has to carry bags for ‘poo’ and use them on all occasions. Logic and common courtesy!

Hi Eha, it is a good law in Australia. Especially removing the dogs poo in bags. I have lost count of the times dogs have pooped outside our drive and we have driven oven it bringing it onto our property. The owners are selfish

I agree 100% Carole. If a person needs or wants a pet, there’s a whole lot of responsibility that goes with it. When I’m on my walks at home, despite it being posted everywhere on the trails that pets must be leashed and owners are required to pick up after their pets (little bags are even provided free of charge) – there are still too many people who ignore these rules. Here in our park in South Texas, it’s somewhat better but that’s likely because here, everyone is watching. The trails at home in Canada are out of town.

Thanks, Terry. There is an element of society here who think the rules don’t apply to them when it comes to dogs. It is so sad because it is the animal who will get hurt. It is the same with No Doogs on BLue Flag beaches. Again the rules don’t apply to them. It is so sad because there are miles of open ground where the dogs can run free.
