How Was Your Week? Remembrance, Creativity and Frustrating News

Last Sunday was Remembrance Sunday and as I watched people laying poppy wreaths at the cenotaph, we are reminded: On the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month….we shall remember them.

and the haunting sound of a lone bugle brought to mind a poem I wrote many years ago, and with the wars in Palestine/Israel and Ukraine still waging, I have updated it

LEST WE FORGET by Carole Hill
Two minutes’ silence echoes
private grief
while the nation mourns

and haunting bugles lament
heroes slayed in pointless wars,
and ‘Big Guns’, salute you.

Some still remember
red poppies of Flanders Field
their seeds from death and blood,
reborn.

The nation wears with pride
our poppy of respect,
as we seek solace in united grief.

Two minutes silence
marks your sacrifice
while others still die in pointless wars.

LATEST ART PROJECT

Last Sunday, I also started a new project with my art teacher. It is a textured painting, but I’m unsure. We will see… Part two this Sunday. The Jury is still out. It’s meant to be the Tree of Life. Maybe if you close one eye and squint through the other? *laughing*

THE BEST LAID PLANS – FRUSTRATING NEWS

We were meant to be going back to England this week to spend time with Family. Everything was organised. Dinners and activities planned and booked. … then came the news our grandson had contracted chickenpox. Now our trip will be delayed until the Spring. Can I scream?

THE ICING ON THE CAKE?

Finally, if we were having coffee, I would also tell you we have had horrendous weather this week. Tornados, floods and storms. We have been lucky (so far) in our corner of the Algarve, but other parts of the Algarve have not been so fortunate.

I awoke at 3am today to discover we had a power cut. A power cut that lasted ten hours, and of course, it was the one time I hadn’t charged my phone or tablet before going to bed.

And the cherry on the cake? The pool is overflowing and the pump is not working…. sigh

Ho hum, our problems are minor compared to the devastation caused by floods, strong winds, and power surges that have wiped out their electrical equipment.

That’s it for this week, folks. I need to do my exercises before powering down for bed. Thanks for stopping by, and I’ll see ya’ll over at Natalie’s blog for other weekend coffee shares

  1. You can’t rearrange the UK trip before then? We’re back into a very pleasant spell of weather. It was horrific for those folks at Albufeira- you always need a bit of luck with violent storms, but it never lasts long xx

    1. Hi Jo, unless it is urgent we have no trips planned before the spring. Too many germs on the airplanes … I feel so sorry for the people of Albufeira they really caught the worst of the weather. Hopefully we will have calmer weather for a while

  2. Oh gosh…what a week. We were just seeing the flooding etc in Portugal and Wales. As to the tree of life I can see it. Needs colour and then it will be there. The chicken pox…sucks man. Here with a newborn baby we fear, sadly, measles. It’s like war, human nature has NOT learnt enough.

    1. Hi Bernie, the flooding and highwinds have been bad but so far we have escaped the worst of it on the west coast and I hope it stays that way.

I am in the process of adding colour to the tree of life but it now looks like a demented tree spirit. Methinks, I need to add leaves.

Measles is a big fear. I remember our daughter had a reaction to the vaccination poli/measles so she never completed the course as a baby. Your grandchild is such a cutie!

  3. You’re an artist in so many ways, Carole. When I was in high school, I wrote a piece for Remembrance day that passed through a couple of levels towards a national award. The piece didn’t make it that far, but it felt good to be recognized.
I’m sorry for the bad weather and the bad week. I hope things are improving now.

    1. Thanks, Terry. The Lest We Forget poem was originally written for a competition … sadly it never made the cut. What a shame yours also never got further. The weather here has certainly been quirky this year but the week IS getting better.

  4. Ugh, all this sounds frustrating indeed! Hope your grandson will be well again soon. Didn’t have the energy to watch the WWII veteran’s video, but I often fear we’re headed towards another worldwide conflict and this time the free world won’t win.

  5. Sorry to read about your grandson’s chicken pox and your pool and pump problems. I hope your grandson recovers well and your pool will be fully operational soon. Thank you for your weekend coffee share.
