How Was Your Week? Physio, Painting, Portuguese and Poorly Plant

If we were having coffee, I’d tell you it’s been a long week with hardly a moment to catch my breath! I don’t know about you, but for me, some weeks drag as one day slowly melds into the next, and while I set out with good intentions that a quiet week at home should allow me time to catch up and clear the backlist of jobs on my To Do list, of course, I don’t. Perhaps it’s because time is like cupboard space: the less time you have, the more you accomplish. We have a saying if you want something done, ask a busy person. Have you heard this?

The Cost of Animal Care in Portugal

Monday mornings are always well spent volunteering at the local ACCT Charity shop, which raises money to help animals.

To be honest, I’m not surprised at the number of abandoned pets. The cost of a vet’s bill is eye-wateringly expensive. Recently, a friend’s dog needed treatment. The cost was nearly €1000! Okay, she could afford it, but low-income families don’t earn that amount in a month!

Why is veterinary care so expensive? Is it because they know some people would rather remortgage their home than let their pet suffer that they charge such exorbitant prices?

Portuguese Course – Yes, another…

I managed to squeeze in on a FREE Portuguese course that had just started in our local village. Friends told me they’d put my name on a ‘waiting list’, but after a couple of weeks, I grew impatient and took matters into my own hands, tracked down the woman who was organising the lessons and begged for a place. I started on Tuesday. The course is only one hour twice a week. No stress parking, and the building is easily accessible. A triple bonus is that I like the teacher. I am determined to crack it this time around. I’ve bought the three textbooks and am already reviewing the lessons I’ve missed.

Physio — OUCH!

Have you ever suffered from tendonitis? OMG, it is so painful. It’s in my hip, and after my first of ten physio sessions, I was in agony.

Hobbies and Interests

I am pleased to say I finally finished my Buddha painting and have started a new project while the creative juices were flowing.

Save the Plant or Should That Be THE Tree?

Dracaena plant
Dracaena plant

This week, we were on a mission to save our monster Dracaena plant. For weeks, it has emitted a nasty musty odour, which has gradually worsened. We knew it would be a huge task, so we planned to dig it out of the mammoth pot, remove and replace all the soil, and replant on Tuesday when our home help would be there to assist us. Except she couldn’t come. I wanted to cry. Mr. P had already uprooted the plant, and it was sprawled across the floor by the time we knew. No matter, Brit stiff upper lip and all that …

After hours of huffing, puffing, bending and lifting, we removed all the dry, spent soil and realised that apart from a small rootball, the rest of the roots were dead.

We refilled the pot with a multi-purpose compost but there was not much in the way of rootball to support the plant. Thinking outside the box Mr. P lugged in some rocks from the garden. Let’s just hope they will be enough to stabilise the plant until and if the roots reestablish. I don’t know if it will survive.

I’d like to linger for another coffee but my job list is getting longer and I have not completed my Portuguese homework.

Do pop over and check out the other #weekendcoffeeshare blogs over at Natalie’s.

  1. The rock topping was a smart idea, I hope your Dracaena pulls through! *I think it should, even with a small clump of roots. Oh, the price of vet care is nuts. Ours has gotten better recently, I think they had turnover (for the better)!

  2. I always love your posts that ask ‘How was your week?’ and continue with ‘If we were having coffee…’ So, I was delighted to discover that there is a #weekendcoffeeshare. I think I’ll pop over to Natalie’s blog to see if I could join in!

Vet care in France seems cheaper than in SE England, and our lovely French vet enabled us to get Zeph (our blue merle BC) a French passport! If only it was as easy for us!!

A free Portuguese class sounds brilliant. I’m stuck with my Portuguese learning at the moment. It’s so difficult compared to French/Spanish – for me, anyway.

I love a big houseplant and I hope your one recovers. I’m sure it will!

    1. Hi June. Thank you. The weekend coffee share has been great and I have discovered many interesting bloggers.Do join us 🙂 I really struggle with Portuguese and as I was discussing with a fellow student today it is probably because we don’t that much opportunity to use it where we are. If you can already speak French and Spanish sounds like you have a gift for languages.

  3. I was recently diagnosed with tendonitis in my left foot. My physio started treatment Ultrasound on it and it improved quickly. In addition, I started taking collagen, which I believe has helped in many areas, in addition to the tendonitis. I hope you find some relief, Carole.

    1. Hi Terry, I am hoping my physio uses ultrasound. I have my next appoitment tomorrow. Lat week it was just massage and note taking. She set me some exercises to do. We will see. Collagen I am not sure if it upset my stomache. I am going to try again with half the dose. I’ve heard such good things about it.

  4. I really hope your large plant survives! And yes, I have heard the expression about going to a busy person to get stuff done. I believe I was the brunt of this one many times as an employee! Vets bills are terribly high. My friend’s greyhound was a little under weather over Christmas and rather than take chances (he was a rescue and new to them) they took him for a professional once over. It cost them £400 and there was nothing wrong with the fellow. All the best with your new language course!

    1. £400 wow! just for a dog MOT. At least there was nothing wrong with him so that was a plus.

      1. My last job prior to retirement was a very good one and I had next to no problems however my long held retirement date was not going budge, despite my then manager trying. Funny as he decided to retire himself shortly after.

  5. That’s a very tall Dracaena plant. I think your plant will survive. I have the same plant at home but cut and grow the cuts into new plants when the parent plant gets too tall. I put the cuts in water until some new roots come out then put them into pots with soil. It’s great that you found a free Portuguese course and you like the teacher. Thank you for your weekend coffee share.

  6. I read this from my apartment in New York City, a big mug of hot coffee at the ready. I have no skill with plants of any kind, but wish you luck! I may have posted a comment on a previous post of yours mentions that my wife and I spent a week in Lisbon and plan to go back to see more of the country…cheers!
