How Was Your Week? Mosquitoes – Where There’s a Will, We Will Find a Way …

Last Sunday, we finally enjoyed a respite from the rainy weather, which allowed me to catch up on laundry and gardening. I say respite but it was still cold and windy.

Mosquitoes and Fly Repellants

Of course, when the sun did appear, so did the wretched mosquitoes. They are out in force, breeding like crazy and turning the joy of being in the garden into a battle. This week Mr. Piglet has been busy emptying containers and trays, etc. of any stagnant water.

We use an industrial DEET mosquito repellant called Relec, which has proven effective, but finding a natural alternative that works would be great. Someone suggested marigolds. I’m not sure. I have been told that the humble marigold deters black and white flies, so it’s a good idea to plant pots in the vegetable garden between your rows of carrots and other crops susceptible to fly but is it really an effective mosquito repellant for humans?

Are you plagued by mosquitoes, and if so, what repellants do you use?

Where there’s a will, we will find a way …

And there’s the truth. A while back I’d asked one of the ladies (Sherine) in our line-dancing group, who is proficient in everything exercise-related, to demonstrate how to use weights correctly to build strength in my arms, and she kindly agreed. That was weeks ago, but I’d never followed through. The week Sherine reminded me and pinned me down to Wednesday afternoon. When I told her why I wanted to do weights, she told me I did not need to build muscle in my arms to get off the floor. It was technique. I was unaware she had a degree in sports science and that she loved problem-solving! Of course, I made an enthusiastic guinea pig.

First off, Sherine studied my thigh muscles—and felt them while I bent my knees. Studied my sit-to-stand technique (from the sofa). Identified that I was overcompensating with my right leg, and gave me an exercise to build muscle in my weak right leg. She gave me further exercises to improve muscle tone and balance. Then we moved to the problem of getting off the floor. Remember, my previous attempt at Yoga took me 22 minutes, and heaving myself upright using the parallel bars was not a solution.

Twenty minutes later, using Shrine’s method, I completed a sit-to-stand unaided in about two minutes. Then another and another. Thursday, I did seven in a row, and Friday, another seven at only around 30 seconds each. It’s not strength; it’s technique. I will continue to practice daily

ETA: This is the technique I was taught

Now, I just need to figure out how to get on the floor instead of just sliding off the sofa.

She also figured out that the physiotherapist’s method for getting up and down stairs was hindering rather than helping. I agree. Now, I must practice stepping up and down normally. If I can crack this, it will be life-changing.

YOGA—It’s Interesting that my Yoga teacher did not encourage me to get down on the floor this week after last week’s challenge. Maybe in a couple of weeks, I will surprise her.

Animal Charity Shop

The moment we opened the door there was a rush of people eager to buy. I am glad I stuck to my guns and refused to work in the shop alone. At least I got to use some of my Portuguese to an elderly lady who, when seeing five sacks of clothes arrive, wanted us to unpack them there and then. Dragging the bags to the store room I waved her away with a ‘Mais Tarde’ and a smile (Later).

While my offer to manage the window displays was politely ignored, I note they are still a dumping ground, and the models are still wearing the same clothes from weeks ago. This observation was confirmed by my American working partner this week, who had some brilliant ideas but also ignored. But that’s okay.

Lunching out …

This week we ate out twice.

And at a new restaurant to us called CAIS DA LOTA down by the riverside in Portimao. We won’t be going again. I ordered Beef Portuguesa, and they smothered what should have been a simple steak topped with presunto ham and chippy potatoes in natural juices with an ultra-processed disgusting gravy. I did not mince my words when asked if I enjoyed the meal. The waiter, who was Portuguese, agreed it was not the authentic recipe. I do hope he passes on the feedback to the chef.

Do you offer honest feedback on a meal when asked? (or even if not)

In the News …

To preserve my sanity, I am torn between watching the news and doomscrolling, aka what’s happening in the world, Trump and his cronies’ latest antics, or ignoring the unfolding pantomime politics, wars, and destruction with a complete news blackout. I can’t make sense of the madness, so what’s the point? It is only making me anxious, which leads me to comfort-eat.

The humorous highlight for me was JD’s non-welcome in Greenland. That’s good. Obnoxious toad that he is.

Decision made: I will avoid doomscrolling and watching the news for 1 week. Devote the time to my art and creative pursuits.

Anyone else?

That’s it for this week’s Coffee Share, folks. Now I pop over to Natalie’s Blog to check out more Weekend Coffee Shares

  1. Despite extremely wet weather here in south Texas last week, mosquitoes haven’t been a problem… at least not yet. At home in Sask, Canada … mosquitoes are always a big issue when there’s lots of moisture. We’ve had summers where it was impossible to sit out on our balcony for even a few minutes. I’m guessing this might be the case there this summer, as there’s been so much snow this past winter. I’ve never found an effective repellent so we just tend to stay indoors when they’re bad. We had a family friend die from West Nile Virus a few years ago, and that same year, my brother was his with West Nile and was extremely ill. Hateful creatures, those mosquitoes. Be sure to protect yourself, Carole.

    1. Hi Terry, the only effective reppelent we have found contains Deet. We also bought a gizmo the end of last year which you burn and it provides a pretective bubble. Haha … not a great descritpion but we only used it once before we packed it away for the winter. If it works I will let you know.

I have not heard of West Nile fever … that sounds scary!

  2. Because we live on the edge of the woods, we, too, are plagued with mosquitos. Last year, Dee bought a screen house that fits over the umbrella and our small round table on the patio. What a difference! As soon as the weather allows us to set it up, I will take a picture of it.

Great job getting off the floor!

As for Trump, Vance, et al. It’s only been about two months. Feels like two years. Every day seems to bring a new horror.

    1. Hi Laurie, I remember the screenhouse. I think your daughter bought it for your birthday? Anyway, I thought it was a brilliant idea Mosquitoes are such tenacious little critters once they get the tast of your blood. I acquired another two bites today! They bit through my trousers right on my butt.

I practice getting up off the floor every day and already I am noticing a difference.

I have resisted looking at Trumps and Vance’s latest antics today. IT was tough but I resisted LoL

  3. Last summer we did not have any mosquitos, and so far not a single one either. Keep my fingers crossed they will stay away. After all rain there might be some eggs on places we usually not have water, and when we now get rain again this week there might be some mosquitos there. Hope not! Smelly flowers and herbs is good, rosmary, lavender, citronella etc. But the standing water is the worst I think.

Hope you´ll have a good start of the week!

    1. Hi Anna, it must be joy to sit in the garden without the dreaded drone of the mosquito whine. We have always been plagued. Probably the location.

I am going to try the citronella spray and see if that helps.

  4. It’s great that you found a technique that works and you have made progress in your movement and yoga. It’s a good idea to spend time on your art and creative pursuits vs. doom scrolling. I’ve read that citronella is a natural mosquito repellent. I wonder if you can buy the citronella spray in your area. This article shares how you can make the spray at home as you may need to spray your garden frequently: https://www.homequestionsanswered.com/how-can-i-make-citronella-spray.htm Thank you for your weekend coffee share.

  5. Hi, Carole – You have been making wonderful progress in your movement and yoga. That’s awesome.

I am so sorry to hear about your meal out smoothered in a UPF sauce. I’m glad that you gave the restaurant feedback on this,

And limiting your doomscrooling is a great idea. I have been doing that by reading a short novella each day. It takes me away from the doom and gloom and gives me a sense of completion! ❤

    1. Hi Donna, it is not always easy to maintain daily exercise so the progress so far has been hard won. Thanks to the FB group I have pushed through difficult days.

The meal I was so dissapointed but next time I order this fraom any restaurant I will check it is cooked in the traditional way before I order. 🙂

As for DS it is good to replace the time with something more productive which keeps our mind occupied.

  6. I stopped doomscrolling after the stolen election. I’ve been participating in protests like the Tesla Takedown and will join friends next week for a bigger one in our main city. I’m not sure what else we can do. Our elected officials do a lot of talking and not much else. After I travelled to celebrate my grandkid’s birthday, my son came for a brief visit by himself and I got to spend 100% of my time cooking all of his favorite foods, so I’m a happy mom. No restaurants for us; he likes to stay home as much as I do. Good job with yoga and exercise challenges!

    1. Hi ES, it is always nice to spend some time with our kids alone. Haha … when they are not running around after their offsprings you get their full attention.

To me the Tesla takedown seems pointless as you are hurting the workers and people who may have invested in an electric car to go green and spent their life savings or got a loan.
