If we were having coffee, I’d tell you I’ve had another busy week. There were many highs, and then came a jaw-dropping low.
Monday, I returned from my first pain hypnotherapy session on a high. With the right mindset, we can overcome certain pain and situations. Fortunately, I have found a doctor who thinks outside the box and whose first instinct, unlike many doctors, is not to dish out meds.
Lunch at Praia de Amoiera

Monday was a rare, still and sunny day so after the therapy I had a ‘Carpe Diem’ moment and persuaded Mr Piglet to abandon his job list and whisked him off to Praia de Amoriera for a snack at ‘Paraiso do Mar’. In hindsight, I should have seized another moment and walked along the deserted beach while we were there.
Yoga for Seniors
My teacher is still convinced she can coax me down onto the mat. I think: in your dreams. I say: Providing you can get me up. She smiles I love an optimist.
Portuguese – Blog
My Portuguese lessons are progressing slowly. SO slowly–I feel sorry for my teacher and frequently apologize for being SO stupid. I am stuck on prepositions. Like stuck in a bog stuck. Preps don’t literally translate into English.
I have decided to start a blog which I plan to write in Portuguese. I can barely string a comprehensible sentence together in English, let alone in Portuguese, so it will prove challenging.
Lunch with Friends
On Thursday, despite promising myself we would only eat out once this week, we lunched with friends at a local restaurant. I chose swordfish, fresh vegetables, and only one small boiled potato smothered in garlic and olive oil. For dessert (which is included in the price) I ordered a slither of sweet potato and orange cake. All the cakes there are home-baked, not from a packet so not ultra processed. Well, that’s my excuse and it was only a slither.
Recipes
I ticked off yet another recipe this week. Cooking 52 new recipes in 52 weeks is quite a challenge.
Flooding
We’ve had so much heavy rain over the last few days that the rivers are bursting, and water rushes down from the mountain into the valley of our local town and beach. Naturally, there is flooding, and some roads are closed. Fortunately, we live on a cliff, and we have not been affected apart from dodging rain-filled potholes the size of moon craters.
Politics – Wow! What a supercilious bully!
We were blown away when we watched the news report on Trump and Zelensky‘s meeting at the Oval Office unravel. I bet Putin is rubbing his hands in glee! Mr T might have received an invite from King Charles, but the British people will not welcome him. I wish European leaders had enough cojoins and weapons to tell him to stick where the sun doesn’t shine.
Mr. T made history that day, and not in a good way.

I feel sorry for my American friends for the shame Mr. T and his sidekick Vance have brought on your once great country.
If we were having coffee, I’d tell you I promised myself at the beginning of the year to avoid the News and doom-scrolling, but sometimes it is unavoidable.
I wonder what highs and lows this week will bring…
How was your week and what was your reaction to the Trumps/Vance’s behaviour towards President Zelensky

It has only been 40+ days since he took office and it feels like a drag. I wish I could avoid the news but my life has been greatly impacted by him.

Hi Julie, only 40days … he is gradually unpicking the goodwill, trust and respect America has earned over the eyars. So sad. I am SO pleased the Canadians are standing up to the bully.

Writing a blog in another language feels like a huge challenge to me! Good for you! Ah, the news I’ve decided is best left ignored at this point. I watch for weather and local stuff and then turn it off.

Hi Tracy, thank you for stopping by. IT is a huge challenge and that’s just trying to set up the blog. I think I’ll just revamp one of my pld ones. As for watching the News. You are right. It’s becoming addictive

Hi, Carole – I am very impressed that you are starting a blog in Portuguese. Leaning a second language is a big deal – especially as an adult. I will be cheering you on the full way!

Thanks, Donna. I am finding it extremely tough. IT doesn’t help that I’m dyslexic so I will ahve to find workarounds. Fortunately, my teacher has the patience of jobe

Hello! It’s my opinion that you need to switch to another teacher…..and that teacher should be bilingual. Portuguese can become quite easy to learn when it’s learned adequately… “It’s no big deal”!

Hi Margarida, my teacher is bilingual. Are you Portuguese? You say it is not a big deal but it is when your native language is not based on latin as say FRench or Spanish and to top that you are dyslexic.
As a native ENglish speak we don’t for example have four ways to say ‘my’, have masculine or feminine nouns and complex verbs. English is straight forward. Portuguese i not. And it is not because I have not studied, I have. Many tiems.
My teacher is kind and patient.

Your meal by the beach looks lovely. Writing a blog in a foreign language would be a good brain challenge. I hope good weather has returned to your part of the world. Thank you for your weekend coffee share.

Hi Natalie, the meal by the beach was wonderful and so peaceful. As for writing the blog I am beginning to think setting it up a new blog is not as straightforward as it once was.

It’s been a little over a month since Trump took office, and it feels like a year. Just when you think he can’t sink any lower, there he goes. Sigh. Feel so bad for Zelenksi, Ukraine, the world.

Hi Laurie, yes. Every day I wake up and think ‘what next?’ I’d love to stop watching the news and lose myself in nature but the pace of change is scary. It reminds me of when we were watching the updates on the Corona virus

Had a neighbor in UK who was a teacher of French he used the music of Jacques Brel his theory that the diction was good and many of his numbers had been recorded in English/American. Maybe you can find a Portuguese Artist who has recorded music you know -may help with translation and pronunciation

Hi jowi, yes I’ve tried listening to songs but at the moment I need more vocabulary. I try to listen to FAdo where there is a transcript with the video and the lyrics are beautiful

Great post, Carole. I love the photo of your lunch view. Well done! Have you tried chair yoga? They have that here in our park and it’s well attended and well loved. As far as the political thing – I try to stay away from political discussions online. That said, the thing you’re talking about was indeed a shocking sideshow and I truly feel for our American friends here who sit on both sides of the political fence. I can’t imagine the embarrassment that has caused. I’m hopeful that it’s a loud wake up call.

hi Terry, the teacher at the Yoga class adapts the class so I can use a chair. IT’s a challenge for both of us 🙂 As for politics I also try to avoid … but on this occasion I could not remain silent.

Hi Maria, it is and we are spoiled. We won’t get near the place once the tourists arrive.

I can imagine it would be crowded during tourist season. I grew up in a tourist town (a ski resort) certain places was only visited by locals during the down season.

IT’s horrible in the high season. there is nowhere to park in our local town or at the beaches. IT used to be quiet here but now ….

It’s been crazy weather, hasn’t it? The carnival organisers must be tearing their hair out. Do you have a parade in Aljezur? The children’s one in Tavira on Thursday was lovely and sunny, as was yesterday at Altura. Not sure for the next few days though.

Hi Jo, we have not ventured out to the carnival this year. I wanted to go to Loule but we were discouraged by the unsettled weather. I don’t think there was a carnival in Aljezur, the closest I believe was odeceixe.
The weather has certainly been crazy as the picture of the handrail will testify..
