It’s all about the background and lighting…
This is subtle.

This is waaay too busy

Back to nature, I position the vase in the birdbath using the leaves of the strelitzia as the background.

I’m not sure …

Seeing the photographs uploaded to my blog, I’m not sure about the vase, which is actually a hand-painted beer glass. But it’s time to cook dinner, and the light is fading.
A thank you to Cathy over at Rambling in the Garden for organising ‘In a Vase on Monday‘

Oh, I missed this one last week. It’s lovely! It also made me laugh…. I often carry a vase full of flowers around the whole house and garden before I find the right spot to photograph it! LOL! The soft light around your bird table is perfect. The freesias are gorgeous colour and really glow in lower lighting though. 😃

Thanks, Cathy. I am relieved someone else walks around the house/garden snapping photos. The birdbath was one of my favourites, too/

Love the beer glass and I prefer the subtle inside backgrounds so the flowers can sing.

Bernie, taken away from nature the flowers do sing in their new environment.

Great story and pretty vase … funnily enough I regularly carry my vase (when I manage to join in IAVOM) around the garden, looking for that best position for light and background for the ‘arrangement’. There used to be a gardener on WP who suggested using photoboards to get some of the best flower shots (https://countrygardenuk.com/photoboards-and-hellebores/)

Hi FD, thanks for the link. “First find the light” sometimes that is the thing I find most difficult inside. Sunlight through the windows in certain room casts shadows. And if not, the back drop is not right with legs of furntiture, etc. etc.. The photoboard is a good idea. I will have to dig in the garage to see what I can find.

That beer glass makes a beautiful vase. Also, I think that arrangement looks so pretty outside. I never would have thought to put that vade in a natural setting.

Thanks, Laurie. The glass is handpainted so I have been loathe to use it as a glass in case I broke it. In truth I’ve never thought about putting a vase of flowers outside until i started to participate in vase on Monday and then thought ‘why not?’

Perfect to use what you have as a vase. Why not a beer glass?

Thanks, Anna. I don’t have many vases so it’s time to get creative 🙂

Thank you, Donna. I wasn’t sure. Perhaps I should use it more often.

What an interesting trial, clearly showing what a difference a background makes – I think I like the third one the best. And what an astonishing yellow the freesias are – this a shade of yellow I find really sings to me. Strangely, I think of it as custard yellow, although custard is not actually that shade but custard powder is, when you first mix it up. Not that I use custard powder these days, as on the rare occasions I make custard I now make the real stuff!

Hi Cathy, yes, I was surpised by the different results. Yes, the freeisad do resemble custard yellow. I am hoping the others I have growing in pots will be a different colour. We will see 🙂
