For this week’s ‘In a Vase on Monday, ‘ the freesias I’d planned to use were still not in bloom. Stumped for ideas, I looked around for a theme inspiration. Bees. Bees are attracted to certain plants. Next, I needed a receptacle. I spotted a Portuguese terracotta shot mug and a log.

Thought. Purple, yellow and wispy. Found a yellow Carpobrotus Edulis as my central flower. For purple I used lavender. Bees adore my wild lavender. And for wispy … Wild Dill.
Then I tried another arrangement. Bees love Oxalis pes-caprae – Bermuda Buttercup.

So I trotted around the garden with my log and vase of flowers. I love the shape of the log, which provides the perfect display stand. And then Buddha.

But my favourite is still …

That’s my inspiration in a vase for this week, folks. You can check out more displays on Cathy’s blog, Rambling in the Garden.

Sorry, I nearly missed this as to keep on top of IAVOM I usually follow up vases from a comment, but I didn’t see one…?
Like the other Cathy suggests, it is such fun following your thought processes, and it is clear you enjoy coming up with something for IAVOM. What a useful log that is!!

Hi Cathy, no problem. It’s been a crazy week. I thought I’d commented on your post. Or maybe I got halfway through writing a comment and got sidetracked! Yes, I do enjoy IAVOM. IT’s harder than it looks. The log will no doubt make further appearances as the months progress. 🙂

That log is so cool, what a perfect shape! The edulis is gorgeous, so fine and feathery.

hi tracy, I also like the log. My husband has rescued many unusual logs from the woodpile.

I love your vase this week – and the thought process that went into it too! I think the most creative vases arise when we think we don’t have any material. But your wispy dill and lavender are a lovely base for any flowers. The Bermuda buttercups are new to me, and I must look them up. I also didn’t recognize the Carpobrotus, but it looks like it wouldn’t be happy in my winter garden anyway. 😉 The vase looks lovely on your log, but I like the Buddha shot too.

Thanks, Cathy. It’s surpising what you can create when faced with limited time and resources.. The Bemuda buttercups and Carpobrotus were also new to meuntil we came here. The Carpobrotus ia a succulent and I don’t think it is frost tolerant.

I love how you incorporated flowers that attract bees—such a great idea. The Portuguese terracotta shot mug was a good choice too and the log adds a wonderfully rustic touch.

Thanks, Donna. Trying to find flowers and a theme for a vase each week is tougher than I thought. The flowers I included are considered invasive but when you see the swathes of bright yellow flowers in the wild swarming with bees it is quite uplifting.
