How Was Your Week? – Beach, News and Challenges

If we were having coffee, I’d tell you I’d have another busy/interesting week.

Games Night

On Sunday, friends joined us for a games night, and I cooked a simple supper of spaghetti bolognese. We then downloaded a quiz app called’ Knowledge is Power’ and a trivial pursuit game onto our TV via our PS4 and then linked our cellphones. I’m unsure how it all came together as the technology whooshed over my head at warp speed as I sipped on wine and watched the glow of the fire, relieved conquering the beast of technology was not my problem. Next time, we’ll go retro and play traditional board, dominoes and card games.

I enjoy playing games. Did I mention I’m competitive? Are you?

Portuguese Lesson

OMG, my poor teacher needs the patience of Jobe. Seriously. I’m sure the moment the lesson starts, my brain empties, and I forget even the basics. For example, I had to construct a sentence that included the word glass. Could I remember the word for a glass? ‘Vidra?’ I offered. ‘No, copo…’ Sheesh. I am always asking for a ‘copo vinho tinto’. It’s one of the first things you learn when you arrive in Portugal!

He then told me there was something wrong with the camera on my laptop, as the screen on his end kept turning green, which was not a good sign. ‘Of course not. It’s the gloop from my brain leaking out of my ears with too much information to process,’ I replied. He blinked. Looked confused. I don’t think he gets my quirky Brit humour.

Coffee on the Beach

Trying to persuade Mr Piglet to go on the beach is greeted with about as much enthusiasm as a dog going to the vet to get its manhood snipped.

Today offered the perfect weather. Sun and no wind. I can’t walk too far before I need a rest, so today we took my beach chair. I love the beach. Just sitting. Preferably with a glass of wine while I watch the Atlantic rollers, listen to the roar of the waves, close my eyes and inhale the salt air. I feel at peace, especially this time of year when there are no tourists.

Praia de monte clerigo February 2025

My goal is to walk the entire length of the beach and back. It’s doable with chair breaks … and maybe a glass of wine as an incentive. WE will see. I’d train by myself without Mr. P but I am afraid of dogs jumping up on me. Some owners have no control and don’t care about anyone except themselves.

Movie Night

This week, we watched a 1995 film ‘Canadian Bacon’, starring John Candy. Given recent noises from the White House about Canada …

has anyone else watched it? It seemed apt and scary considering …

52 New Recipe Challenge

I only tried one new recipe this week. ‘Marmalade with Ginger’. Not my finest moment. But I did cook the delicious Spinach Chicken Casserole with Cream Cheese and Mozzarella so that’s a winner. This time around I never precooked the spinach.

DeClutter Challenge?

No, you have not lost the WILL, Piglet. Get your butt into gear and find a way.

In The News

No matter how hard I try to avoid watching the news, Trump is everywhere and as an outsider I don’t know what is fact or fiction. I don’t trust the media. This week, news on imposing tariffs on certain countries, such as Mexico and Canada, left me confused. Greenland and Gaza takeover I had a WT*? moment and moved swiftly on. AND as for banning men who have transitioned to women from female sports… after watching the boxing event at the Paris Olympics, I realized that common sense ruled my opinion. ’nuff said.

Meanwhile, our local activists are rallying against the humungous potholes in the roads, and dogs. Other things as well … but I tune out. At my age I am wise enough to realise you can’t push water uphill with a rake. Got that t-shirt.

I could go on about hospital appointments, line dancing, exercising, diet and more … but I see your eyes are already glazing over.

  1. Your beach is lovely and I cheering you to be able to walk it back and forth soon. It´s very difficult to understand all expressions and slang you brits us. Our best friends are from UK and several neighbours, I need to tone out sometimes, I can´t understand even if I think my english is good. In my post today I write about portuguese pronounciation.

    1. thanks, Natalie. Walking beside water, whether sea, harbour, lake or river has always appealed to me more thank walking across open countryside. My declutter challenge definitely needs some good luck vibes!

  2. What a busy week you had! I am a *huge fan of game nights and, before we moved an hour away from town, used to host game night for our friends and colleagues several times a year. I’d be right there with you with the tech of it all, but it sounds like it all worked out and fun was had by all!

As for news from the USA, I live here and am simply flabbergasted by the all the happenings. Not surprised, mind you, we knew this was possible, but the horrors persist and are all too real. I follow several independent journalists and lean on the BBC for an “outside” perspective. It’s all… a lot.

Anyhow! Thank you for finding me through the coffee share! I’m happy to have met you and look forward to learning more in the coming weeks! Have a great week ahead!

    1. Hi Melissa, thanks for dropping in for a coffee. What games did you guys play?

News from the US also leaves me flabbergasted! I can’t believe Trump has designs on making Canada 51st state. The movie Canadian Bacon was made 30 years ago and it was a comedy back then but now …. it’s not qute as funny.

      1. We’d pull them all out and let people pick and choose which to play with who 🙂 Favorites were Pictionary, Trouble, Dominoes, Scrabble, Boggle, Stack, and Clue. These days we really enjoy Tenzi and Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza when family come over. Both are good fun and can accommodate as many or as few people as you have.

  3. Oh, that beach! If I lived nearby I would join you. I think my knees are even worse than yours, which means a chair for me is essential. Still, it’s mighty fine to sit on the beach and watch the waves.

As for the news…we watch PBS and listen to NPR. The political news is very bad here, but I will not look away.

  4. Hi, Carole, I always enjoy your weekly updates—your mix of humor, honesty, and everyday adventures makes for such a great read. Wishing you success with your beach-walking goal (wine breaks sound like excellent motivation), and I hope your decluttering mission finds its spark!

  5. A busy and interesting week indeed, Carole. As far as the news goes … I try to stay away from the major networks as much as possible. I prefer to read my news from Reuters, which is apparently more centre than left or right leaning. It’s so hard anymore to get the facts without the exaggerations of journalists. There was a time in my life that I aspired to be a photojournalist. These days, I’m thankful that my career path didn’t follow that route. Oh and by the way, I love all sorts of games and yes, I’m very competitive. We’ve never had game nights with anyone but family – and then usually only over the holidays, so maybe that’s something we’ll look at.

    1. Hi Terry, yes, a busy week. 🙂 News … I wish I could silence it and switch off the internet and become a hermit. TV, your waiting to watch a TV program and there it is … Photojournalism would have been challenging.

A games night can be great fun and relaxing and perfect for the long winter evenings. I love to play games with the family when they are over but I am useless at card games such as UNO.
