Weekend Coffee Share – 2025 Reset

Stop the World, I Want to Get Off! If we were having coffee in RL, I’d tell you I took a break from blogging during December—not just from blogging but also from watching/reading the news and using social media platforms. I was/am fed up with fake and manufactured news, misinformation, disinformation, wars, lying politicians, sporting scandals, wokeism, cancel culture, personal health issues, which I am still trying to resolve, and more. My brain is fried and frazzled. Do you ever feel the need to reset and re-evaluate?

Diet—I am ashamed to say I abandoned mine for the best part of December. I needed comfort food during this time, and lettuce and spinach are not the same as cake. I know I’ve put on weight, but that’s okay. I am back on the healthy eating wagon again as of yesterday, and hopefully, the excess kilos have not had time to make themselves too comfortable.

Exercise—On a positive note, I did manage to maintain my daily step count of around 5,000, thanks to the hours I spent running around cooking, cleaning, shopping, and doing standing abs workouts.

Plant Therapy—I confess, I did treat myself to some new plants to cheer me up. We were having coffee in a shopping centre when I noticed a woman on the next table with two beautiful orchids. Never one to be backward in coming forward, I was by her side in seconds to enquire where she’d bought them. Auchan the supermarket. At only €12.99 each, I abandoned my coffee and bought two orchids and another bromeliad.

Christmas and NYEDid ya’ll have a good Christmas and New Year. How did you celebrate (or not)?

Ours was hectic! Our family from France (daughter, son-in-law, and two grandchildren, ages 10 and 13) came over for Christmas. Then we all decamped to a holiday resort (Alfagar) in the Algarve for a few days to celebrate my seventieth birthday and New Year’s Eve. Some close friends also joined us for the celebrations, which was nice. I am pleased to say that the weather was kind, and we enjoyed glorious sunshine and balmy temperatures. We even managed a couple of hours on the beach on my birthday followed by a cocktail at the beach bar!

Age is just a number, right? I’ve hit the dreaded 70—the winter years. Mentally, I don’t feel any different to when I was twenty. Physically, mobility is an ongoing challenge, but I absolutely refuse to give in.

New Year’s Resolutions? I made 3.

  • Resume the low-carb 80/20 plan and ramp up my pledge to avoid ultra-processed foods.
  • Try a new recipe every week.
  • Maintain exercise routine (5000+steps) and include chair pilates (I’d love to find a class)

What about you. Any Resolutions?

  2. Hi, Carole – This was such a relatable post for me. It showed how much we have in common. I also took a big social media break in December and the first week of January. I just needed to reset and get out of some (very) bad scrolling habits. The break was exactly what I needed and so far, I have been much more intentional and vigilant in the use of my phone and computer.
I am also on a quest to better understand and avoid Ultra Processed Foods. Although I have always worked hard to maintain a healthy diet, those darn UPF ingredients are everywhere. Whole grain breads, non-dairy milks, nut butters, cereals (including muesli), rice cakes, dried fruits…the list of seemingly healthy foods that can actually be UPFs is endless. My current phase is “knowledge is power” and I am trying to learn more.
Thank you for joining up with us for Wellness Reimagined. I look forward to following your posts.

    1. Hi. I believe wellness reimagined starts with our mental health and once we remove the toxins from our mind we can then work our body. 🙂 The UPF are indeed a huge problem and that is why I am going back to basics (or at least try) to eliminate as much as possible. BUT I know it will take time and I accept if I eat out I can’t avoid them … so no stress … as we gradually reeducate ourselves.

      Knowledge is indeed power 🙂

  3. First off, happy milestone birthday. 🙂

Last but not least, I totally understand the burnout from… everything, really. Good for you for taking a break (from here and with your loved ones); take as long as you need. Cheers.

  4. Happy birthday and happy New Year, Carole. I don’t do resolutions. I set small goals and work towards checking them off. Thank you for your weekend coffee share. Have a great week ahead.

  5. You have to show us your new orchids! I can relate to your feelings about media. I often turn my phone off and I don’t own a TV. I watch the shows/movies I want on my laptop.

    1. Hi Maria, yes, I could live without TV. I don’t even know how to operate ours LoL I only watch about an hour of TV per day to be sociable and my viewing only includes shows that do not include violence or horror.

Re orchids I plan a gardening post this week.

  6. I did miss you, but lots of people take breaks around the holiday and there’s a lot of coming and going, self included. Yes, thanks – I had, and am still having, a grand old time. Just home from an Algarve Orchestra free concert in our Carmo church. This kind of thing simply doesn’t happen in the UK. I brought the lurgy back with me, but have just about defeated it. All the fault of the grandson, bless him! What’s wokeism? Just living the best life I can and causing as little pain as possible. Happy New Year, Carole!

  7. Welcome back, Carole! I’ve missed you. I hear you about the ‘dreaded’ 70th birthday. None of my other birthdays worried me, but when I hit that one just over a year ago, I let it play little games in my head for a while. I’m happy to report that it truly is only a number … at least so far, lol. It sounds like you had a wonderful celebration with family. Happy Birthday and welcome to the 70-something club! With your determination and resolve, you’ll get those holiday lbs under control in no time. You’ve kept up the steps and that’s key.
