Last Halloween, our grandkids were staying over, so we dressed up and went trick-or-treating. We had great fun, and some people went all out to embrace the fun by decorating their gardens and placing a pumpkin outside their gate.
This year, despite the absence of our grandkids, we embraced the spirit of Halloween. Mr Piglet bought me a small pumpkin to carve into a face. (it was the last pumpkin in the shop)

We bought a selection of sweets which I divided between several baskets. Last year we ran out of goodies because some children grabbed handfuls. This year, we were more frugal to restrict the flow.

and I dressed up as a witch

I decorated our entrance gate with ghouls and ghost masks. (forgot to take a photo)
Once it got dark, I placed the pumpkin in a prominent position outside the gate so the children knew we embraced Halloween and they were welcome.

At dusk we heard the excited chatter of children at the gate. I also had fun by hiding in the bushes and when they appeared I popped up, made cackling witchy sounds and made them jump! Haha … they weren’t expecting that!
I am pleased to say ALL the children were well-behaved and polite and a good time was had by all!
Are you a bah humbug, or do you embrace the Halloween spirit?

I have never embraced Halloween 🙂 You really went all-in and with that happy kids I understand it was appreciated!

Hi Anna, yep … sure did. We are probably a marked house for next year.

I love everything about Halloween—candy, witches (especially witches), and things that go bump in the night. Because we live on a country road, we don’t get any trick-or-treaters. Darn! Looks as though you had lot of spooky fun.

That’s a shame, Laurie. There’s the ember of children’s story in your words 🙂
When we first came here the only Halloween fun was if the local bard decided to hold a Halloween fancy dress supper. How things have changed.

Well done on embracing Halloween, Carole! We used to go all out for the kids, inclusive of even a haunted house we created in our basement one year for those who wanted a walk through. Now, in our seniors park here in South Texas, there are no children going door to door, so it’s pretty quiet. Some decorate their yards a bit, and that’s about all. I miss the fun.

Wow, Terry. You really went for it! I love the idea of creaing the haunted house in your basement…what fun! We never used to have many young families her but now the demographics have changed so has the community spirit.

I’ve always hated Halloween but you look like a very friendly witch. I don’t do the miserable thing of putting lights off and not answering the bell, though. We have a big bowl of sweets by the door. I love the excited sounds of the kids but usually send my husband to the door. Still lots of sweets left so I’ll take them out for the walkers tomorrow. Happy All Saint’s Day!

Happy All Saints Day.
We hated Halloween in the UK but so far it is different here. The parents/grandparents or older brother escort the smaller children and they are all well behaved. I only had one large bag of treats left. I don’t think our new neighbours opposite knew it is a big thing where we live so they dashed out and bought lots of sweets which they let outside their gate in a big bucket.
