I was leaning into the orange tree to check if an orange was ripe before I picked it. So intent was I on my task that I failed to notice this handsome monster, but inches from my nose.
ChatGPT confirmed it is an Egyptian grasshopper. It’s a common species in Portuguese gardens and can grow to around 5–8 cm long. It feeds on leaves and is generally harmless to people. GENERALLY HARMLESS TO PEOPLE! When it came into focus, I nearly expired on the spot!

Hi Maria, do you get many monster critters in Sweden?

I was afraid it was going to be a snake. As I recall, we are equally afraid of them.

Hi Laurie, if it were a snake, there would be no photograph. Trust me. Once I got over my initial fright of being within inches of it he actually posed for a photo.

I recognized it instantly as it looks the same as the flipping ones here. Not really harmless when they can, with all their buddies, destroy entire fields.

Hi Bernie, fortunately I spotted just the one. I have seen one before but not for some time. Then he was taking a nap on one of my hibiscus. Hopefully he does not invite his buddies to join him
