Another new ‘HIPster’ trendy café recently opened near us. Several have opened in the last year aimed at a particular clientele, all on the same theme, with funky decorations and usually beanbags or homemade logs as seats (not all of them, admittedly). They also charge the earth and the moon for a basic cup of coffee.
Anyway, apart from the prices, I had to eat my words about the decoration. Along with more traditional café-style seating, with what looked like reasonably comfortable chairs, they also had a couple of squishy, deep leather sofas. You know the sort. The kind where you need a block and tackle to pull you out.
As I was admiring some of the décor and how they’d transformed a previously dingy and dark Portuguese restaurant into a bright, airy space, a hand-carved piece, chiselled out of an old tree trunk, caught my eye.
I’ll pre-empt the next sentence by explaining that Mr Piglet loves the tactile feel of wood so my request did not seem unreasonable.
I pointed to the carving. ‘Hey, you could carve one of these!’ I enthused.
Sadly, Mr P did not share my enthusiasm and gave me one of those withering looks that conveyed, ‘Over my dead body.’
What do you think?

Love this! It really adds so much character to a space when local art is woven into the vibe!

Ugh..not a fun of uncomfortable chairs but seems I don’t do coffee places I don’t have to do them. As to the carving…need the right spot for them.
Talking about right spots…that is where I was yesterday.

Love this idea – not the trendy takeovers in far too many cities – new places are great, but not with all the pretension…
