The Praia do Carvalhal is a “Blue Flag” beach located in the Alentejo about 12km from Odeceixe. If you appreciate natural beaches you will enjoy the peaceful and unspoiled location.

WESTERN ALGARVE
There are probably over 80 beaches in the Algarve 69 of which awarded the “Blue Flag”

I will be visiting and reviewing several of these beaches over the next year but my focus will initially centre on the beaches of the Western Algarve and Costa Vincentina.
Praia da Carriagem

Praia da Ingrina
The blue flag beach, Praia da Ingrina is a small sheltered cove off the beaten track popular with locals. The water is clear and perfect for swimming, snorkeling and fishing. Some activities such as kayaking and paddle-boarding also depart from the beach, however, these need to be booked in advance. Full details available here.

PRAIA DE VALE DE FIGUEIRA AND PRAIA DA CANAL
Praia da Canal is a small pebbly beach which then merges with the long sandy beach of Praia de Vale de Figueiras.
These deserted beaches can only be accessed via a rutted unmade road near Arrifana. The off-road tracks are like a maze in this area so I suggest you check out Google Earth for the exact location.
Please note there are no Cafes, Toilets or Life Guards. Access to the beach is via rutted tracks so a four wheel drive is the best option.
PRAIA DO ZAVIAL
Praia do Zavial is an off the beaten track beach situated just outside the village of Raposia. It is an unspoiled beach popular with the locals.

PRAIA DO MONTE CLERIGO
Monte Clérigo is located in the Parque Natural do Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vincentina near the historic town of Aljezur. An area of outstanding natural beauty it is totally unspoiled by the ravages of tourism. The one thing that amazed me was the good facilities for the disabled (in season) on such an noncommercial and natural beach.

PRAIA DA AMOREIRA
Praia da Amoreira is a beautiful unspoiled sandy beach. It is popular with surfers, fishermen and those who just want to get away from the rat race of mass tourism and concrete high-rise. There are no shops and I have not seen any concession areas so you will need to bring your own, parasols, beach chairs and windbreaks, if required.

PRAIA DO VALE DOS HOMENS(VALLEY OF THE MEN)
Praia do Vale dos Homens beach is located in the Costa Vicentina Natural Park just outside the village of Rogil in the Western Algarve. It is well off the beaten tourist track which makes it an ideal choice for anyone looking for a great “get away from it all” location. While some websites say it is suitable for bathing, I am not absolutely convinced. If you look at the video and pictures you will notice at low tide there are rocks along most of the shoreline.

There are so many beautiful beaches in Portugal, you just need to choose -from north to south and even the islands. You can sunbathe and go for a swim in Senhor da Pedra Beach in the north or Comporta Beach in Alentejo, Quarteira Beach in Algarve or visit the Azores and Madeira for a different experience. Summing up, Portugal is the country to visit if you want to be just next to the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea enjoying the warm sun and the crystal clear waters.
