PET PEEVE: WordPress Block Editor

I have not posted anything to my blog for a while so today I decided to get back in the swing of things and rejoin the Six on Saturday gardening bloggers. I spent ages wobbling around on my crutches to take photographs of my garden.

Excited, I logged on to my WordPress account to create a new post only to find I am presented with a whole new layout using piggin’ blocks and I can’t find anything. WORDPRESS, I don’t want to use blocks. I can’t find where to add photos/media or headings etc. As a techno-muppet I was PERFECTLY happy with the basic classic editor.

RANT: I have just wasted an hour trying to create a simple post only to be thwarted by technology. Why change something that was working fine?

For those of us not technically minded, what do you think of the new block system? Is there a way for me to change back to Classic editor?

I eventually found how to add a photo but where it’s not where I want it. Haha… at this rate my Six on Saturday will be Six on Tuesday. I feel defeated by technology. I need a large Gin and Tonic.

  1. I hated it at first as well. I’m used to it now but it wasn’t intuitive. I am having other issues where I can’t edit my page in terms of background photos, etc. I need to get on the support chat.

  2. Oh I hear ya!
And you can’t easily link to old blog content either, which drives me crazy… installing photos should be the simplest activity, they’ve really got that wrong 😦
    Very annoying. Good luck! G

  3. I reluctantly adopted Blog Editor a while ago as WP wore me down with its insistence that I use it. I hated it initially (it took me ages to complete my first couple of posts using it) but I must admit I’m fine with it now. I just use the paragraph and image blocks mind, I haven’t explored what else it can do nor do I want to!

    1. I just ignored all their sales pitch and carried on as normal so you can imagine my horror when they changed it by stealth in my absence.

WordPress use to be easier to use when I signed up 10 years ago. There was also more of a community feel with all their blogging challenges.

  4. Here is the conversation I had with Mike !

If you’d like to use the Classic editor you can be activating this plugin: “Classic Editor”

    From here:

    https://mybeautfulthings.com/wp-admin/plugins.php

    Are you still there?
I’ve been to the link, clicked on Classic and am still getting the block editor.
    Taking a look, one moment

    It’s not activated yet

Maybe this will help. I hope so.

    All the best 🙂

  5. I’m with you completely! I really detest the block editor and even when I did as suggested here by Lemonjooz, I still kept getting the block. I wrote to WordPress and today one of their Happiness engineers (!) helped me to get back to Classic. I will try to find the conversation and get back to you.
Dina says we are losing Classic completely in 2022. Perhaps if enough of us complain, we’ll be able to keep it.
Glad to hear that you can get about your garden on your crutches. 🙂

  6. I’ve had the exact same experience with the block editor. WordPress had insisted I use it for a while if I went back to edit posts after they were live, so I’ve known for a while that I disliked it immensely.

  7. It happened to us yesterday as well. We opened WP and was confronted with the Gutenberg Editor. We spent quite some time getting used to it, it’s actually not that bad, albeit we are still struggling a wee bit. The classic editor will be gone by 2022 so we decided to jump into it. You can still use the classic editor, but only until 2022; go to plugins and install the classic editor. Hope this helps. 🙂
    Wishing you a lovely weekend,
