Weekly Smile: Coffee on the Beach

Every week Trent encourages us to share a smile via his ‘Weekly Smile‘ meme. In a world where we are surrounded by so much chaos, it’s important to press pause for just one moment and focus on the little things in life that make us smile.

This week my smile comes courtesy of our local beach.

Thanks to the tendinitis, arthritis and meniscus problems in my right knee and subsequent operation in January, I’ve not felt the sand between my toes or paddled in the sea for nearly nine months! As a beach worshipper, this has been a constant source of frustration as I could only enjoy the beach from the clifftop.

So….Sunday morning I decided it was time to brush the cobwebs from our beach chairs have coffee on the beach and paddle in the sea.

There were a couple of challenges
– My beach chair was way to low and as my knee does not bend very far – I dug a hole in the sand for my feet so the chair was higher. Success!
– While paddling at the water’s edge I’d forgotten the incoming tide comes across instead of up the beach so one minute I was dipping my toes in the sea and the next it was washing my knees and soaking my shorts. Normally, I would run and take evasive action, but not this time I had to stand like a rock and pray I would maintain my balance in the quicksand.

Even though I was wetter than intended it was great to feel the sand between my toes and scour the shoreline for interesting stones and shells.

  1. No wonder we are encouraged to think and speak of mind-body medicine ! As a doctor I know ! As one who also ‘has’ all of which you speak, I follow ! Well, most of the time . . đŸ™‚ ! Oh, mostly there is a ‘way; !! And does it not make you feel super when you find it for yourself: the only one who counts !! Wish I was there and we could laugh and say ‘yes, you can’ !!

    1. Hey, Eha. I wish you were here. The surgeon set me all sorts of challenges after the op, including 30 mins on a stationary bike – which was impossible for me and only exacerbated the problem. Eventually, I gave up and listened to my body… walking and acupuncture proved to be the most successful treatment. Gradually build up exercise from around 200 steps to 4000 steps per day… next goal 4500. It really makes me push myself to the next level

      I have also just ordered some Tumeric tablets (with pepper) for the inflammation… we will see. đŸ™‚
