Pet Peeve: Plastic Pre-Packaged Fruit and Vegetables

Why oh why are fruit and vegetables sold prepacked in plastic packaging? This is just a small selection of produce on display at a well-known supermarket. While I needed these items I refused to buy on principle. If more consumers boycotted overpackaged produce maybe the message would eventually get through.

This week. I asked the OH to buy carrots as I wanted to make some coleslaw at the weekend. He was very sheepish when I unpacked the shopping and discovered he had bought prepacked carrots in a plastic bag.  I only wanted three carrots and these were packaged in kilo bags. Not only is this promoting food waste but also yet another plastic bag to be added to the plastic mountain!

Why do we need shrinkwrapped cucumbers?

I don’t care if the plastic packaging CAN be recycled. I’d rather not buy it in the first place.

Imagine all this plastic crap in my recycling bin.

I even refuse to use plastic bags and have replaced these with reusable drawstring sacks. I put the fruit and veg directly in the sacks which are then weighed at the checkout as normal.

Alternative to plastic vegetable bags

In time I will make my own but for now, these will suffice.

  1. Our supermarkets are the same, despite getting rid of the free plastic bags at the checkout and so claiming to be single use plastic free. Now they just charge you for plastic bags if you don’t want to use cloth bags!
It’s over packaging and why I prefer to buy my fruit and vegetables from our local fruit shop. It costs a little bit more, but there’s no plastic and better quality produce.

  2. GADS!
I lack the power tools to unwrap some of the produce! They get all squished in the process.
Such wrapping is ironically less common at my common supermarket than it is as the store that sells ‘sustainably’ grown and ‘environmentally responsibly’ grown produce!

  3. I make my own produce bags! Have been for 10 or so years now. Once you make one and get it down, they are super easy to make. You’ll be making them for all your friends and fam! And if they get gross, just pop them in the wash, so easy!

      1. Uhg, get that baby back up and running! You will be so happy you did! They make brands that are not too too expensive nowadays too if you want to spring for a new one!
