After my experience in a Portuguese hospital this week for an operation on my meniscus, I am back on my crusade to lose weight.
Before I was wheeled down to the operating theatre I was given a gown and a pair of paper modesty pants (knickers). Now, before I continue this story, I’m not huge just round(ish). As I struggled into the pants, I had a fit of nervous giggles borne from frustration and embarrassment as the nurse watched but could offer no solution to my predicament .
The holes of the legs were barely large enough to accommodate my thighs and as I tried to hitch them up further the waist elastic barely stretched over my nether region. I was mortified.
“Don’t you have anything larger – mais grande?” I asked hopefully.
“No, just one-size to fit all,” replied the nurse then shrugged apologetically.
Oh well, the poor surgeon will get an eyeful, I thought as I was pushed along the hospital corridors to theatre. How ridiculous that the one-size-fit-all was no larger than about a size 14-16.
When I eventually came round after the operation and back in the privacy of my own room, as they were cutting in, I asked the nurse to cut them off and I’d go commando. She willingly agreed and we laughed at their skimpy proportions.
I’ve already lost 5kg (nearly 11ib) and I’d like to lose another 10 kg. As I can’t exercise for some time, and I love my food, it’s going to be an uphill struggle. Ho hum, I will have plenty of time to study fat-free/low calorie recipes as I can’t even wander round my garden at the moment.
Onwards!
Noo!!! Full fat… cut the carbs!! Don’t count calories… recover quicker, and lose weight!! Promise… it works – just cut the carbs!! Really… I wish you well, and a speedy recovery… and yes, one size doesn’t fit all – especially when it comes to choosing food! Just don’t believe all the bumpf the food industry wants you to believe! 😉

Does G&T contain carbs? Joking. 🙂 Seriously i am following the slimming world diet and so far it is working for me. Although, it’s on pause at the moment as I’m just relieved to be fed.

I reckon G&T is NO Carb!! Stick with it… most likely better that that other diet… cos diets don’t work… lifestyle is what we must go for!!
Sorry… I’m talking too much… again! 😉 Yep… G&T… that’s the answer… beware the liver! 🙂

I hope your knee is healing well. Congratulations on your weight loss.
In my experience, ‘one size fits all’ actually means ‘one size fits nobody’. ;)[[

Good luck and know that you can do it…..also that it takes 28 days to make a new habit (positive or negative) Happy New Year. Janet 🙂

Thanks, Janet. right now it seems a long 28 days 🙂 I’ll get there eventually. I so want to get fit again and if losing weight means I will get my life back then it’s got to be worth the effort.

You will get there…When I have been in a losing weight mode….I have found it very important never to feel hungry. In other words to make sure that I have lots of the right stuff….veggies, fruit, etc. and that I eat little and often. Again, remember it takes 28 days to form a new habit……janet

Having just started my own diet using the NOOM app I can’t help but identify with your frustration at not being able to move freely or prepare your meals. Hope you have a rapid recovery. As to those ‘one-size-fits-all’ claims … either they’re made for children or giants! Anita

Thanks, Guys. On a positive note at least I’ll have plenty of time to plan menus and eat ‘virtually’

All the best for your recovery and the losing weight, never easy and more of a challenge when you can’t move about. 🙂

Thank you 🙂 I’ve promised Hubby I will not walk much so I am now wondering what exercises I can do with the top half of my body that will burn calories 🙂

Hope all went well with the op and a speedy recovery Carole. How ridiculous to have a one size for all knickers in hospitals.

Hi Sami, I don’t know whether it is general or just that one. If I’d been offered a feedback form (as it was a private hospital) I’d certainly have mentioned it 🙂

When I had my lumpectomy in 2016, I was allowed to wear my own knicks under my theatre gown. Had a ‘wee’ accident though so was glad I’d taken in a spare pair!

That’s what I had expected and saved a new pair for the occasion. As for spares I always have at least 20 LoL

Ah, poor dear! That had to be embarrassing! Actually, I am envious that you were given modesty knickers. Here in the States, it has always been “commando”.

At least it focused my attention on something other than the op. It did make me chuckle.

Stateside we get to wear our own pants under the gown. Thank goodness! I hope you heal quickly.

That’s what I had hoped. I was a bit non-plussed when presented with something that did not fit. Still, at least I found some humour in the stress.

Hope the surgery went well. I’d would hate to be off my feet for a while, so I hope recovery isn’t too bad.

Thanks, Trent. Hopefully I’ll be back up and about without crutches in about 6 weeks. Sooner if I had my way…. 🙂

Have you seen the Pinch of Nom website? They have the most wonderful healthy recipes on there. I use it for inspiration alongside going to Slimming World for the group support and find that works for me. Good luck.

I lost almost 3 stone with SW two years ago and although a stone has gone back on, I have maintained my current weight for over a year. I had the right idea, but got my ratios wrong, so SW definitely helped with that. It’s hard work trying to lose it again, but I’m trying!

Well done on the weight loss and maintaining it. Jan Jay in one of the comments suggested a helpful website. I am going to take a proper look later.
