Christmas Means Bacalhau

Shopping in Intermarche this week we (actually the OH) noticed this Bacalhau Christmas tree.  What a creative way to display and promote Bacalhau! This certainly made me smile.

Bacalhau anyone?

It’s as stiff as a board, smells disgusting and looks about as appetizing as the prospect of munching on chipboard. In fact, it’s so hard it has to be cut into pieces using a band saw when you buy it! Bacalhau, also has to be soaked for about 3-4 days, (changing the water twice a day) to remove the salt, before it can be cooked. So much effort so what is the reward? 1. The wife has already got this years’ supply in and will soon be preparing it.
Not something I partake of any more, being vegetarian for several years now.
But one sign that things are changing – the fish at the Portuguese shop my wife always buys from – The Mediterranean – are smaller than we have ever seen them.
    Not a good sign.
