Blogging and Goals – Input Please

Dear followers, I’ve signed up to the WordPress Blogging 201 (basically how to improve your blog). Over the next two weeks we are given various assignments. This is my first assignment and I need your help, please.

Today’s 201 assignment is to consider what I want to accomplish with my blog. Good question!
question201

I’m curious, why do you follow my blog?
What topics are of interest to you?
Is my blog easy to navigate?
What about design?
Any other suggestions, please?

I can pontificate ‘til the cows come home about what I think is of interest but it’s you guys who decide with your visits, likes and comments.

I was then asked the following questions so I have a vision of my blog which I must then translate in to three specific goals.

Why do I blog?
To connect with people from all walks of life and from different countries who share common interests and values. Interests can range from travel, hobbies, cooking, gardening, life in Portugal, poetry, books, lifestyle etc. or just a random rant for discussion.

To gain notoriety?
Am I notorious? I’ve met perfect strangers in real life and they’ve exclaimed… “Oh you’re Piglet!” Joking aside I have followers from all over the world and I’d like more.

To secure a book contract?
Yes, please. I’ve written a novel, during NaNoWriMo 2012 – it just needs editing.

One of my poems has also been published in a magazine so that’s my only claim to fame at the moment.

To self-publish your work?
Yes, I intend to. I’m now an active member of a writing website WritingForums.comwhere I glean lots of useful information and interact with other writers.

To establish yourself as a leader in your field?
No, the scope of my blog is too broad.

To gain followers?
All bloggers want to gain followers, don’t they?

Traffic?
Yes, I’d certainly welcome more traffic.

To connect with others?
Most definitely!

To work through and clarify your own thoughts?
Sometimes, but it really depends on the topic. I’m a private person by nature so I don’t tend to wear my heart on my sleeve. Yeah, so I tend to joke about diets, midlife crisis and other bits and bobs and I’ve even been known to have the odd rant about kindles, barking dogs and bullfighting

If your blog exceeded your wildest dreams, what would that look like?
Looking back to when I started pretty much as it looks now although I’ve not checked out any of the latest design options.

Would you have a different design?
I’m always open to suggestions…

How many followers would you have?
How long is a piece of string? Okay, 7000 not 700.

How much traffic?
This depends on not only writing engaging regular content and how the various topics are ranked in Google, but also how I promote my blog through the various social media channels.

What sort of community would participate?
I don’t have a target market in mind. Different topics appeal to different readers.

What discussions would take place?
Lifestyle with a touch of humour. Anything else?

So why do I need goals? I was given a whole host of reasons but this was my favourite…

Because achieving a goal is a great feeling that motivates you to set and meet new goals, creating a continuous cycle of awesome.

My three goals are:
1. Publish a minimum of one post per week during April, May, and June.
2. Update my Pinterest with a minimum of three pins a week.
3. Publish an interview with one local charity, one blogger and one author by the end of June.

Are they achievable? YES, of course they are…

Please don’t forget to answer the questions at the beginning of the post or leave a random comment to help spur me on!

  1. I’m so far down the comment list, I can’t see the questions! I follow you because you are really interesting, even if I haven’t been a regular visitor of late.

Your site is easy to navigate, definitely. I like the design because it is clean and clear.

I have no preference for topics.

PinInterest. Hmmmmm I have kept away from it because of the possible copyright issues.

On a personal note, I hope you are fit and well, the grandkids are growing and your stove has stayed fixed!

    Happy Easter!

Pinterest… I only tend to post my own photos and it does drive traffic to my blog.

Oh yes… my pigging oven post… you could not write the script. WE’ve had the boiler and the internet since then…

  2. I enjoy reading your blog as in a way we experience the “opposite” (me in our country, you in my country kind of thing).
My favourite post from you is the one about the assador the barro (known as “porquinho” where I come from), as it somehow reflects how cultural clashes happen even in everyday occasions. I laughed a lot and still mention it to friends when we talk about cultural differences.

I think even after a long time living somewhere there will always be things that surprise us. Keep posting on those stories, I love reading them.

  3. I started blogging while trying to get my book published and was set the target by the eventual publisher that she would consider the book once I had at least 3000 visits a month. The easiest way to do that was to write what people wanted to read and blog a lot – at least once a week. I can’t remember the exact date or why or how I stumbled upon your blog but I know it inspired me. Not sure if that is much help lol

  5. I found your blog whilst researching Portugal. I love your sense of humour and view of life in the Algarve. Your blog style is easy to follow and fun. The frequency of posts and variety of topics covered are just right.
Don’t do too much analysing, I would hate for you to lose the spontaneity and relaxed style.

  6. Hi piglet I follow your blog because your garden antics are a real interest to me as I’m back and forth to Portugal for the past 2 years and am in the process of moving there full time. Also I enjoy your wit and humour which as an Irish person we need as much as we need Guinness. To finish , the poem you posted when your Mum passed away was very touching so why do I follow you because you are good at what you do, keep doing it. Thanks for blogging.

  7. Morning PiP,

I do not remember how I came upon your blog but I find it enjoyable and it makes me LOL on occasion too. Having a home on the lovely Algarve Where we visit almost every month I am interested in your take on life in the South and how you cope with integration, burocracy, gardens, markets and such. I like your blog just as it is 😉

  8. Hi there, I see you’ve got a second wind 😉

I started following your blog because I like to connect with people who have lived (or are living) in different countries from where they grew up. I like their conflicted take on life, lol. I also have a particular interest in Portugal, I’d like to travel more to that country, and, quite possibly, move there in a few years.

Topics of interest… humour, cultural insights, pretty photos, food…

  9. Blogging, why your blog Carole, because I like to follow your experiences, as an English speaking person, living in Portugal & learning the ways of Portugal, in the area that you live in & your take on things.

As someone who speaks equally Portuguese & English, I have lived in the Azores & Portugal’s north. I live, in a nation where English is the main speaking language .I LOL a lot at what you are saying or your understanding of what you have learned or experienced. Other times, I want to reach out & say, no no that’s all wrong, your take on something.

I love that you are introducing others to Portugal, to a part of its history, to some of its traditions, ways, to its great healthy cooking, to its festivals, feasts and so on.

I learned a few things, on a number of things, from gardening, to how to make a few things and ect…from your postings.

I also like to see others peoples response to your postings.

One day I hope to go to the south of Portugal.

A few things I would like to see, postings on,your take on, banking in Portugal, dining out , going to services (Mass)in Portugal, ect.

I hope that helps, keep on blogging and have fun .

    🙂

    1. Great feedback, Maria, thank you. I’ve never been to mass in Portugal. Perhaps I should try. Is it held in Latin? I remember the masses at school.
I’ll also write a post on banking and some more posts on dining out. 🙂

      1. Hi again,
I want to wishing you and your family a Blessed and happy Easter and also to the rest of people who follow your blog. 🙂

Mass is not in Latin, it is in Portuguese, (most of the time). Regular mass will be about an hour long. However during special times of the year (like Easter time) masses will be longer, as there is a lot of singing and ceremony. I am all for the more singing, candles, ceremonies. For example, in the Azores, masses that part of the Holy Spirit crowning, will be much longer, as there is number of historical ceremony rites to be done during this mass.
I am all for going to churches, with the biggest choirs, with the most instruments played, with the highest ceilings, so that you can feel the power of the music and singing !
        Enjoy !
        ( )..( ) HAPPY EASTER ! Feliz Páscoa!

        1. Hi Maria
Feliz Páscoa! I’m a little late with the greeting but the thought was there.
I will find out the times of our local services and go along. I’ve only been to the church once and that was for a carol service.

  12. For practical reasons I do not have my own blog but land like a cuckoo in other nests! Why? To travel around the world, meet likeminded people, share ideas on whichever common topics we find and. hopefully, make friends! Many local friends here laughed and said ‘not way’, ‘not possible’ – after a few years methinks I am right and they are missing out!! It is amazing how one ‘senses’ which people one would get along with and laugh with ‘even’ on a blog! Noone forces us to stay with someone – one feels a connection and has fun if this be the case . . .
