Is Social Media and the Latest Technology “Gizmo” Driving YOU Crazy?

When I bought my Blackberry, I thought about the 30-year business I ran with 1800 employees, all without a cell phone that plays music, takes videos, pictures and communicates with Facebook and Twitter.

I signed up under duress for Twitter and Facebook, so my seven kids, their spouses, 13 grand kids and 2 great grand kids could communicate with me in the modern way. I figured I could handle something as simple as Twitter with only 140 characters of space.

That was before one of my grandkids hooked me up for Tweeter, Tweetree, Twhirl, Twitterfon, Tweetie and Twittererific Tweetdeck, Twitpix and something that sends every message to my cell phone and every other program within the texting World.

My phone was beeping every three minutes with the details of everything except the bowel movements of the entire next generation.

I am not ready to live like this.

I keep my cell phone in the garage in my golf bag.

The kids bought me a GPS for my last birthday because they say I get lost every now and then going over to the grocery store or library. I keep that in a box under my tool bench with the Blue tooth [it’s red] phone I am supposed to use when I drive. I wore it once and was standing in line at Barnes and Noble talking to my wife and everyone in the nearest 50 yards was glaring at me. I had to take my hearing aid out to use it, and I got a little loud. I mean the GPS looked pretty smart on my dash-board, but the lady inside that gadget was the most annoying, rudest person I had run into in a long time.

Every 10 minutes, she would sarcastically say, “Re-calc-u-lating.” You would think that she could be nicer. It was like she could barely tolerate me. She would let go with a deep sigh and then tell me to make a U-turn at the next light. Then if I made a right turn instead.Well, it was not a good relationship.. When I get really lost now, I call my wife and tell her the name of the cross streets and while she is starting to develop the same tone as Gypsy, the GPS lady, at least she loves me.

To be perfectly frank, I am still trying to learn how to use the cordless phones in our house. We have had them for 4 years, but I still haven’t figured out how I can lose three phones all at once and have to run around digging under chair cushions and checking bathrooms and the dirty laundry baskets when the phone rings.

The world is just getting too complex for me. They even mess me up every time I go to the grocery store.

You would think they could settle on something themselves but this sudden “Paper or Plastic?” every time I check out just knocks me for a loop.

I bought some of those cloth reusable bags to avoid looking confused, but I never remember to take them with me. Now I toss it back to them. When they ask me, “Paper or Plastic?” I just say, “Doesn’t matter to me. I am bi-sacksual.” Then it’s their turn to stare at me with a blank look.

I was recently asked if I tweet. I answered, No, but I do fart a lot.”

A friend emailed the above words of wisdom and although a joke, the underlying message touched a nerve. What about modern technology and the various Social Media channels such as Facebook, Twitter, Klout, Pineterest, Google+ all wanting their pound of flesh and precious moments of your time, are they driving you mad or is it just me? In the end we end up going round in ever decreasing circles. That’s before we’ve tried to suss out how to operate the latest gizmo! I can’t even use my mobile phone properly and as for the remote control forget it!

And you thought this was going to be a serious discussion on the “ins and outs” of social media!

  1. Fun post. I have completely resisted Twitter and hide posts from the folks who “tweet” on Facebook – I have set up a group for them that I can visit when I want to see what they’re up to! I will be glad my cell is connected, though, when the power goes out and that’s my only link to the internet!! 😉

    1. We can spread ourselves way to thin, I think this is why this touched a nerve with me. I can loose hours…down the rabbit hole. I tempted to ditch klout, facebook and pinterest.
I had no idea blackberries were going obsolete, but surely you will still be able to use them?

  3. Thanks, PiP! This amusing glimpse at techno time sucks made me smile ~ I don’t waste time with twitters, tweets, pinterest, stumbleupon, etc., etc., etc.. Just me and my blog . . . and seldom visited FB account.

  4. New technology is awesome! I’m always eager to drink in the lovely new gadget or thingamebob that will become obsolete within months (or sometimes weeks!) but I draw the line at a tv advert that’s been circulating recently about an electronic toilet that “cleans” you after calculating how much “stuff” you’ve produced! No! What next? “The Digi-Bog 2.0 – The toilet that Tweets your every movement!” Uh-uh. No thanks!

    1. 🙂 yes a techno geek…I might have known 🙂 the techno loo is something else. In France I visited one set of loos and could not believe it when you stood up the toilet flushed by itself. Wriggle on the loo at your peril!

  5. I had a good giggle at this post Carole. I have been on facebook for a couple of years but only accept those “friends” I actually know. Otherwise the immensity of posts would be mind boggling, as it is I think a lot of people post the most idiotic updates every 5 minutes, so I basically read a couple of posts and see if any of my friends has a birthday and I´m out! It´s a good way to post photos so family and friends can see them. Twitter I can´t get my head around it yet. GPS I couldn´t live without it if I´m travelling somewhere I don´t know, but ours is also about 4 years outdated which means some of the newer Perth suburbs aren´t even there!! Pintrest is a haven of beautiful things, and I keep on filing away something else I would like to do, craft, sew…All in all I find I now spend a lot more time on the internet than a couple of years ago, maybe I should give up looking at Pintrest and actually do some sewing, crafting, painting…

    1. Hi Sami,
Glad this post also made you giggle 🙂 It’s amazing how we can be hooked on different aspects of the interent and before we know the day has gone! Pinerest, I’m not sure about…yes get sewing for real 🙂

GPS we updated our maps on line and it crashed the card. The updates were too big and our poor son in law went and bought a larger card and then spent a whole day of his holiday trying to recover the data.

Well if anyone is looking for IKEA in Lisbon with Tom Tom…it does not know where it is. 2 hours we spendt looking for IKEA on TT instructiosn

  6. Cute story, PiP. I joined Facebook four years ago because a friend who was living in China was using it as his photo gallery. Now, I have 155 “friends,” many of whom I’ve only met once! Though I find most of their comments tedious, inane, ridiculous, or even offensive, I still look at Facebook multiple times a day. It’s like an addiction.

A lot of this “social media” actually creates degrees of separation between people. Instead of sitting down and having coffee or sharing a meal or a walk in the park, we’re poking at buttons on some machine and telling ourselves that we’re “connected.”

    1. Excellent Sally! 🙂 As for poking at buttons. Texting drives me mad. I refuse to take part, but my sons are especially bad. You can be holding aconversation with them and all of a sudden you realise they are pressing buttons on their mobile phone and their mind is esle where!

  7. Thanks for sharing this Piglet – it describes OH to a tee! I do try to keep up with technology and use Pinterest to keep ideas for crafts etc. in one place.
My only issue with my smart phone is that it does not come with a smart battery! I’m always recharging. The earlier mobiles could go for days without needing to be charged and now with a smart phone I run the risk of not being able to make a phone call when I most need to because the damn battery is flat!

  8. We have fun with ours in Portugal…sometimes it tries to take us up single track unmade roads. Once we were looking for the big LE Clerk in Lyon, and the GPS system took us all down the back alleys..I’m not talking back streets I am talking alleyways LOL. Of it loses signal in the middle of a big city and you are left dangling.

However, it was a life saver in MAdrid when we got lost. Not sure if we went the most direct route but at least we got back onto the main road again!

  9. I do have a blog and use Facebook, but only because I’m an expat and it’s easier (€€€€) to keep up with friends this way.

But in my case, I’m a software/web developer, so I can’t really escape it, but try to avoid it whenever possible.

As for the GPS, it already save me a lot of money, especially since I work in different places all the time.

    Cheers

    1. Hi Rui,
Am i looking at the right blog becuase I see you’ve not made a post since 2010 which is a great shame? Facebook, I’m still not sure about. Perhaps, I just don’t get it! LOL :)GPS yes I can see the benefit but in Portugal we’ve been taken miles off route to join the same road we were on at a later point, and one night my daughter was driving and it was directing us a single track. IT was only the fact I knew the road and stopped her. Had she been by herself it was a single rutted dirt that lead into the middle of nowhere. HAving said that I think GPS is great if you use it in conjuction with a map 🙂

Do you write a blog about life in Norway?

      Like

      1. Yes, I need to have time to write in my blog again. I do have some new nice recipes.

I don’t live in Norway, I’m just here working. I’m basically living everywhere.
I was in the Netherlands, then Belgium, I’ll be here in Norway a few months. God only knows where I’ll be next.

In the mean time, I have no work in Portugal and we have a daughter.

That’s the problem with life, you have to make choices.

I could stay in PT and live on charity or I could take an attitude. I chose to take an attitude.

I do make friends and good ones. Apart from the fact of not having my family with me, it’s been a great experience.

  10. Your post made me laugh as I was just in the process of writing a post on my blog about Pinterest and Stumbleupon! My husband and I both bought ‘smart’ phones before we came to Portugal. And to be honest they have had their uses from a nifty google translate whilst in an akward situation to helping us find our way home when hopelessly lost up a mountain. But we brought them to keep in contact with friends and family and app’s like Viber are a godsend for free phonecalls, photo sharing and messaging. But I recently discoverd Pinterest and Stumblupon and ever a fan of the irreverant and pretty pictures I was hooked totally. I can now spend endless hours trawling through endless pictures and websites. But the worst is I do it furtively. If my husband passes by I quickly click onto the word doc I was working on. I think I need help!

    1. Geeesh, Viber sounds like some form of disease!
I’ve joined Pineterest, but not sure of the benefit – so you are hooked! It will be interesting to read your post 🙂
I think as far as gadgets are concerned I have not got the patience 😳

  11. Well – I am fighting back and grinning all the way! Two years ago some competition [yup, love ’em and do win!] led me to facebook. Fine: felt like a kindy kid at Uni, but had what is known as a steep ‘learning curve’! One year later, just somehow I was in six foodie groups and had 750 fb ‘friends’ in 28 countries! Actually great fun, but I DID discover there was such a thing as ‘opportunity cost of time’: where did the day go? SO, I have a landline, often on answering service when I work, and a computer: if I work hard I allow myself x time for fun blogging and my vit D is normal again, my garden is not a weedbowl and my local friends remember what I look like! And I am back trying recipes and feeding the hordes!! The yin and yang of life 😀 ! AND, loved your story!!!!

    1. Hi Eha,
Sounds like a great plan. 750 friends on FB must have been hard work! I sometimes think each aspect of Social Media is like a juggling ball. You try and juggle them all!

      Do you have a blog?

I recently bought a new laptop with the idea I could sit in the garden and write. But have not done it yet.

I must try some more recipes. I’m gradually putting all my favourites in a folder for quick reference!

      1. Sadly no blog for a number of quite practical reasons – so am a cuckoo in the nest of many and hope they do not mind! Actually met so many fantastic people on fb I quite enjoyed it, but when a few, possibly rather lonely ones, got upset because I did not get to them fast enough with 8-10 ‘conversations’ going on at once I saw the ridiculous ‘unreal’ side of it and simply walked away last Christmas. Quite inconvenient ’cause can’t ‘like’ my foodie blogger friends’ efforts now 😦 ! This suits better tho’ as I ‘talk’ when I can, one person at a time. I do fulltime ‘work’ from home and take a lot of tertiary courses, so it is a juggling act I still haven’t mastered!! I DO garden, but sadly rarely sit there 🙂 !

        1. Your a very welcome cuckoo to my blogging nest 🙂 I have to confess blogging is very time consuming. I love it, but sometimes I feel sad I’m unable to visit all the blogs I like every week.
I used to like working from home but found it lonely at times and was easily distracted – and that was before I discovered blogging :).
