According to English folklore there are many superstitions surrounding hot cross buns. My favorite superstition is accompanied by the rhyme…
“Half for you and half for me,
Between us two shall goodwill be”
Apparently, if you share a hot cross bun while saying the above words it is meant to ensure friendship throughout the coming year.
This is my first attempt at making “Hot Cross Buns” so here’s to sharing them with all my blogging buddies… HaPpY eAsTeR!
Hot Cross Buns are traditionally eaten on Good Friday served either hot or toasted. Some believe the cross symbolizes The Crucifixion while others maintain the buns pre-date Christianity. The cross in Saxon times was in honour of the goddess Eostre and symbolized the four quarters of the moon.
Ingredients
For the buns
2 oz caster sugar, plus 1 teaspoon
5fl oz hand-hot water
1 level tablespoon dried yeast
1lb plain flour

It’s nice when we rekindle memories from our childhood. I don’t remember having hotcross buns, only Easter eggs. Perhaps my parents did not eat them 😦

Hi nice to meet you, I came through American Resident. I’m a kiwi where Hot Cross Buns with loads of butter are part of my memories of the end of summer – for some reason they not so big in the States where we now live, not sure why…

Can´t see my previous comment but you mentioned something in reply about Delia´s scones not working for you. Me neither! Now I use Celia´s from The Kitchen´s Garden recipe http://thekitchensgarden.wordpress.com/2011/08/31/longing-for-scones/ It´s fantastic and it takes longer for the oven to warm up than to make the scones!

Weird. Cups are standard measurements (used also a lot in the US) but I bought my set in the UK. Will look them up later on and let you know what they hold! I use them a lot now as when I first moved out here I didn´t have scales 😦 Now I do though!

Hi Barb…they were delicious but they gave me wicked heartburn 😦 Be careful of the temperature. My oven cooks very hot so I had to turn it down.
