The Ugly Bug Spring Jive

With the Herald of Spring the bugs start to arrive
in my Garden of Eden for the “Ugly Bug Jive”.
The weird and the ugly they give me the jitters
who may I ask created these critters?
There are black bugs and green bugs and stripey ones too
perhaps they’ve escaped from the Ugly Bug zoo?.
Grasshoppers and spiders arrive at my door
the Jive’s in full swing so they take to the floor.
The Ugly Bug Jive is now the “In” thing
and a great way to cheer, the arrival of Spring.
The birds, snakes and lizards come looking for lunch
The “Ugly Bug” guests look an appetising bunch…

Insects are really amazing creatures. But they can amaze me OUTSIDE so I can run like hell 😀

PS I think all spiders are poisonous. It depends on the size whether they can or will bite. But I might be wrong there.

We have some pretty crazy bugs here too, and plenty of snakes – I’ve done a rollcall in my blog too! Spiders doin’t generally bother me, but that hairy fella looks well scary. Love the poem.

Loved the slide show, great poem. Bugs here tend to be of the pteradacyl size. Moths the size of your hand, tarantulas the size of plates and lizards the size of small crocodiles. The tarantulas pull the fur out of their bottoms and throw it at you, and when it hits you it itches like fibreglass. Always avoid bald bottomed tarantulas as they are obviously easily annoyed.

Wow! Some amazing specimens – is that spider poisonous? I used to be arachnophobic, can you tell? I cured myself and am now chief spider catcher in our house, responsible for their safe return to the wild (read unceremoniously tossed onto the porch). My natural inclination is still to recoil though! Skinnies I can handle, but big, solid, fat ones?

Hi Aisha,
I think someone told me it is a wolf spider. They bite but not sure if they are poisonous. When it walked over my hand I was so petrified I could not move. Lucky the camera had a motion control feature for shakey hands.
We have a skinny spider here called the brown recluse spider it looks harmless but believe me it’s not! the solid fat ones do make more mess when you squash them…

We have similar creatures here. Makes you wonder what they do and why they are colored as they are. There has to be a reason.

I adore the geckos and the cicada’s but the spider gives me serious creeps (childhood trauma that I’m trying hard to brave as an adult) This bravery usually entails trying not to have a hysterical meltdown whilst frantically summoning Himself for “disposal duty”.
… and I wish for a garden… ( go figure).

The big spider in the picture actually crawled over my hand when I was removing some compost from the bag. I was so paralysed with fear I could not even scream. Probably lucky because someone said these spiders can give you a nasty bite! All the bugs pictured I find in my garden

Thanks for entering PiP! I let Christina know to look for your entry here. I like this, it made me giggle. Many of the bugs are found here in the US as well, but they seem a bit larger in Portugal, at least based on your photos, whew, they’d have me screeching just a little.

Not having had a garden when we lived in Portugal (we lived in a flat) I was unaware of all these bugs, I thought only Australia had enough bugs to “bug” me! I am always petrified of touching some things in the garden as something scary might jump on me! They also come inside the home -like spiders, ants, silverfish…There are bugs I had never seen and don´t know their purpose or name…

the bugs here looked like they have been genetically modified! I’ve never seen such a selecection. You have some pretty grim bugs in Australia – especially spider and snakes as I understand!
